Mazzulla Returning As Girls B-Ball Coach?

The school committee reappointed the parks and recreation director to the girls' varsity basketball post from which he announced his retirement in February.

With one exception, the Johnston School Committee on Oct. 18 unanimously approved appointments to six coaching vacancies for winter sports at Johnston High School — including Parks & Recreation Department Director Dan Mazzulla to the post of girls' varsity basketball head coach, from which he .

Co-Athletic Director Ed DiSimone, during a phone interview on Oct. 19, said that Mazzulla has not, in fact, completed the district's formal retirement process — and noted that, with the board's 5-0 vote to reject Carmine Giarrusso's application to be junior varsity basketball coach, "there are going to be a lot of changes, but we don't know yet."

DiSimone said Mazzulla's appointment was a preliminary step, and that he has several options available — including taking the junior varsity coaching slot.

"He might retire, he might move to a lower position, I have no idea," DiSimone said of Mazzulla. "It's up to Dan's decision — they didn't reappoint Carmine Giarrusso to JV, so there may be a lot of switches in the next week or so."

Reached by phone before the school committee session, Mazzulla declined comment. Calls to Mazzulla on Oct. 19 were not returned by presstime.
