He's A 'Reel' Leader In URI Film Collaborative

Daniel Larsh, a URI student, founded the Film Collaborative last November to give students opportunities in film.

Danny Larsh, a alumnus, class of 2009, has always had his eyes behind a viewfinder. Constantly drawn to all aspects of film, Larsh founded the University of Rhode Island Film Collaborative during his sophomore year of college.

“The URI Film Collaborative is a student film organization at URI. We welcome students across all disciplines and want to provide students with the opportunity to think creatively, collaborate with other members and produce quality work,” Larsh said.

The URIFC also reaches out to various academic departments and student groups at the university to assist with their filmmaking needs.

When asked what his roll in the URIFC is, Larsh replied: “I am currently serving as president. Basically, I’ve been coordinating projects from the group to be involved in."

Larsh also mentioned that the new organization has been nominated for the URI “Rammies” awards. The group will find out if they have won on April 26.

Expanding the body of work students take on is another goal of the collaborative, Larsh said.

“We offer opportunities students to expand their portfolios, while not worrying about the type of production required for a grade," he said. "We make sure that there is some sort of creative outlet aside from that, a project that is thought of, written, produced and edited entirely by URI Film Collaborative members.”

The URI Film Collaborative is currently working on many projects, including a Red Bull promotional spot on request from the multi-cultural student dance group, eXposure. They are also involved in the filming of a “Campus Life” project, which is a series of two-minute videos highlighting different services, activities and opportunities on campus.

Larsh said the collaborative is still in its early stages, though he added he's intent on helping it grow.

"We are a new organization and we are still working on getting our funding," he explained. "I desperately want this group to succeed and flourish, so I will do what it takes to ensure that happens.”
