Town officials said they ordered Broad Rock Renewables shut down today after what is being described as a series of alarming health and safety violations.
The cease and desist order was issued this morning.
Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena said the company, which collects gas from the Central Landfill, was venting untreated gas into the atmosphere, using duct tape and broomsticks to prop up hoses and has ignored town and state officials' demands.
