Johnston Double Murder Suspect Remains in Prison

Daniel Rodriguez, 28, is accused of killing two women and kidnapping a 2-year-old child from a Johnston home on Aug. 11.

The Providence man arrested in connection with a double murder and kidnapping in Johnston remains at the ACI in Cranston after he waived his right to a bail hearing, the state attorney general's office announced.

Daniel Rodriguez, 28, agreed to remain in state custody at a Sept. 24 bail hearing in Kent County District Court, attorney general spokesman Amy Kempe said in a statement.

Johnston Police charged Rodriguez with two counts of murder, three counts of using a firearm in a violent crime, and one count each of kidnapping, burglary, and carrying a gun without a license.

The gruesome crime was first reported to police by an eight-year-old who dialed 9-1-1 on the morning of Aug. 11, when Rodriguez is accused of breaking into an Oaktree Drive home and killing his girlfriend, Evelyn Burgos, 40; and her daughter, Vanessa Perez, 25.

Two other children were found unharmed in the home by police; a fourth child, 2-year-old Isaiah Perez, was the subject of an Amber Alert and was later found wandering near the Chad Brown complex by Providence Police

Shortly after the discovery of the murders, police announced a manhunt for Malcolm Crowell, 22, who was later cleared of any charges after he cooperated with investigators. Police Chief Richard Tamburini said on Aug. 12 that Crowell had "no involvement" with the murder/kidnapping.
