Greenslit, 53, was found guilty on March 11 of one count each of first-degree domestic murder, obstructing police, violating a no-contact order, and failure to report a death.

Johnston Police and firefighters responded to a reported fire on Jan. 22, 2012, at the Pershing Street home Greenslit had shared with Stacie Dorego, 39, and their two children.

When they arrived, Greenslit tried to stop rescuers and police officers from entering the home. Responders later discovered charred remains in a basement fireplace that were later identified as Dorego's.

The two children were taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital for treatment, and later released to the care of family members who organized fundraisers to assist with their care.

At the time of the murder, Greenslit had been serving a suspended sentence and probation on a charge of domestic assault brought by Johnston Police the previous October. He had also been charged in three prior domestic violence cases.

Prosecutors proved at trial that Greenslit had stabbed Dorego to death, dismembered her body, and tried to burn the remains in the fireplace.

During the four-day trial, a cellmate testified that Greenslit admitted to the murder, and prosecutors showed sometimes graphic photographs of the crime scene, according to WPRI.com.

The jury in the case issued its verdict on Monday, March 11, after hearing final arguments on March 8.

McGuirl denied Greenslit's request for a new trial on March 27, according to online court records.
