Viewfinder: JHS Baseball Re-Cap

We take a look back at the Panthers' 2011 title run.

They started in the (relative) cold of late March and finished in the heat of June — and with their 4-1 win over Prout on June 8, the Johnston High School varsity baseball team earned the title of state Division II champions. The accompanying gallery of photos and videos cover the 2011 season, from Opening Day to Championship Day. Right from the start, the Panthers looked strong — they won a close game to start the season against Woonsocket on April 6, then went on a streak of 10 victories before the Villa Novans stopped them exactly a month later with a 5-4 decision. Johnston also flat-out trounced a few of its divisional rivals — including a 14-2 victory at Ponaganset; a 16-4 win over Burrillville; a wild 20-10 contest at Mt. Hope in …

Viewfinder: Renovations At Former Mohr Library

Town employes are doing the work to turn the former library into a new courthouse.

This week, we take a look at the ongoing work being done to the former Marian J. Mohr Library to turn it into a new municipal courthouse. Court Administrator Joseph Tedino is doing most of the carpentry work himself — he also drafted the design for the renovation — and other town employees are completing the installation of plumbing, electrical service, fire alarms, new staircases, and other features. The in-house work is keping down the cost; Mayor Joseph Polisena estimated that the town will spend less than $250,000 — $200,000 of which has already been budgeted — to retrofit the old library.

This week, we check out art and science projects on display at the Johnston School Department main office.

The accompanying photos show student artwork and science projects that are on display at the Johnston School Department central office. Asst. Supt. Dr. Arthur Petrosinelli said the idea to display student work started with the recognition that the central office "is an extension of the work done in classrooms throughout the district." Teachers select the projects that goes on display, Petrosinelli explained, adding that "the hope is to have a revolving exhibition of student work."
