Children's Social Skills Series to Begin at Mohr Library

The series will run each Saturday from Apr. 6 to May 18.

  Learning good social skills is an important part of every child's life, especially once they have reached school-age. Sharing, problem-solving and holding polite, conversation are everyday skills needed for productive development and Mohr Library (1 Memorial Ave.) is giving Johnston children the chance to interact with one another in an interactive, structured setting. The "Breakfast Bunch" is a free social skills group designed for children ages 6 to 8 years old, featuring games, crafts and fun activities. Two school psychology doctoral students will lead the six-week program, scheduled for Saturdays, Apr. 6, 13, 20 and May 4, 11 and 18 from 10-11:30 a.m. Registration is required. Mohr Library Offers Snowy Start to New Year

On Jan. 2, children can learn the science behind winter weather while making a craft.

  Kids love snow. They love snowball fights, building snowmen and snow days from school, but do they know exactly how the wintry white stuff is created? As part of its "After School Adventures" series, the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library (1 Memorial Ave.) is hosting "Snow!" on Jan. 2 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The free program is directed at children in grades K-3 and will allow them the opportunity to discover how snow and other precipitation is made. Instructor Ms. Michelle will also show the group how to make a sparkly snowflake craft.  Mohr Library holds "After School Adventures" programs at 4:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month through June, 2013. Mohr Library hosts an art session for grades 3 through 6 today at 4 p.m.

This afternoon at 4 p.m., Marian J. Mohr Library hosts Art Smart with Ms. Melyssa for grades 3 through 6. Each session — held on the second Friday of the month — focuses on the work of a great artist. Past lessons have included the styles of Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and Jasper Johns. Join library staff for a discussion of the best-selling "Game of Thrones."

Join staff Fiction Specialist Kevin Broccoli at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., today at 3 p.m. for a discussion group on "Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin. The best-selling books are now a hit series on HBO. The first novel features a fantastic cast of characters that includes kings, thieves, murderers and more. EVENT OF THE DAY: Spooky Movie

The Mohr Library hosts Halloween movie night tonight at 6.

What's better on Halloween week than a scary movie? Jump out of your skin at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., during a screening of "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant" (rated PG-13) tonight at 6. Based on the series by Darren Shan, the movie is about a young boy named Darren Shan who meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a vampire. After a series of events, Darren must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak and become a vampire.   Looking for all the local Halloween goings-on in one spot? EVENT OF THE DAY: Spooky Movie

The Mohr Library offers a free Halloween movie for students today at 2:30.

Celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year a week early during Halloween Movie Day at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., today at 2:30 p.m. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to stop by the library to watch "The Witches," based on the Roald Dahl book for free. Snacks will even be provided. The Witches is a 1990 film adaptation of the book of the same name by Norwegian-British author Roald Dahl.It was directed by Nicolas Roeg and produced by Jim Henson Productions for Lorimar Film Entertainment and Warner Bros, starring Angelica Huston, Mai Zetterling and Rowan Atkinson. EVENT OF THE DAY: Science Fun

Today is the scheduled start of Mohr Library's Science Club.

Beginning today at 6:30 p.m., Marian J. Mohr Library kicks off its Science Club for students in grades 3 through 5. Tonight's theme is Bubble Science, where members can explore basic concepts behind soap bubbles through fun experiments and devise bubble-creating instruments.
