5 Things To Know Today

Aug. 23: More Bus Routes, Less Summer

Pick-up and drop-off times for private schools top the list of our 5 Things to Know Today for Aug. 23, 2012.

  1. More Bus Routes: Keeping with this week's theme of student transportation, today we're posting the Johnston bus routes to private schools, including St. Rocco, St. Philip in Greenville, Trinity Christian Academy, and Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket. In case you missed the previous ones, here they are: 2. Less Summer: With the start of school scheduled for Aug. 29, that doesn't leave a whole lot of time to get the kids outdoors — and today is the perfect day for it: Mostly sunny with highs in the 80s. About the same through the end of the week into early next week, so there's no excuse to let the young'ins stay indoors. 3. [POLL] Should Johnston Accept Out-Of-District Students for a Fee?

The Barrington School Committee is considering accepting 10 such students next year, for tuition of $12,800 per pupil — do you think Johnston should follow suit?

The Barrington School Committee made a splash earlier this week when they said the School Department would accept out-of-district students willing to pay $12,800 a year to attend Barrington schools. They have since stepped back a bit, but with ever-tightening school budgets, we wondered whether our readers thing the Johnston School Department should explore such a proposal here. “We’re looking at new sources of revenue,” said Barrington Supt. Robert McIntyre in a story on the topic in Thursday's Providence Journal. “This is new. It’s different. It’s an opportunity for us.” Two things drove the decision, the ProJo reported, the need to raise more revenue and a decline in enrollment. As reported by RI Future, however, there could be legal …

Johnston schools are actually better than many others in this state. Our elder daughter attended private parochial school for grades K to 8. When tuition was raised to almost $11,000 we decided it was best to send her to JHS and put the money into her college fund. Our daughter who was in advanced classes in her private school was not academically prepared for honors, AP, and EEP courses at the …   more ›

Board OKs Free Dental Care For Students

The Molar Express will bring free dental care to students; six faculty additions were approved, as well as 10 bus monitor positions.

At its Sept. 13 meeting, the Johnston School Committee voted to bring in the Molar Express, a no-cost mobile dental clinic, to the district. The Molar Express program is sponsored and operated by West Bay Smiles. “The Molar Express continues to be an extremely effective program at brining no-cost dental care to children 21 and under,” said Tara Pratt, a representative from West Bay Smiles. Pratt explained the program has a high enrollment in communities such as Cranston, Warwick and Coventry — and actually makes children want to go to the dentist. Committee members discussed hosting an open house on a date to be determined. Also during the session: The next school committee meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the N.A. Ferri …
