Not all meteorologists accept the name game, or acknowledge this storm as Nemo.
You've probably heard occasional — but perhaps not frequent — references to this winter storm as "Nemo." While it makes for some good jokes about that cute little orange fish, Nemo is not the brainchild of the Disney Corporation, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. Gov. Lincoln Chafee has declared a state of emergency, as forecasted snowfall totals continue to increase. Parts of Rhode Island — including Johnston — could see as much as 30 inches of snow by the time the storm abates tomorrow afternoon. Johnston residents should be getting off the roads and hunkering down as the storm picks up steam. There is a very good chance Johnston will see 2 feet of snow, according to wpri.com, but areas from Providence and points north could potentially get 30 inches. "We have a very serious storm approaching," Chafee said. "I encourage all Rhode Islanders to take this seriously. This is a major storm. Be prepared." Light snow should begin this morning, intensifying into a dangerous blizzard by tonight.
The forecast has remained fairly steady over the last day or so, and Johnston is still expected to face potentially hazardous blizzard conditions tonight into tomorrow, resulting in 2 feet or more of snow. Schools have been cancelled, a parking ban is in effect and officials are urging residents to finish their business and get off the roads by early afternoon today. The storm is expected to begin with flurries around 10 a.m., slowly intensifying through the day. the height of he storm should hit this evening, continuing through the morning Saturday. A potentially historic blizzard is bearing down on Rhode Island.
No class in Johnston tomorrow. Johnston public schools are closed Friday due to the approaching blizzard, the school department announced Thursday afternoon. Snow is expected to begin Friday morning, intensifying throughout the day and reaching its height overnight Friday, into Saturday morning. At its peak, the storm is expected to dump as much as 3 inches an hour on Johnston, with some estimates putting the total snowfall over 2 feet. Strong winds are expected to accompany the storm, with gusts approaching 60 mph. Travel will be hazardous, and drivers are advised to stay off the roads Friday into Saturday.
