Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.
On July 18, my friend and I went to Scramblers II on Greenville Avenue for lunch, and were greeted by the friendly staff when we got there. The diner was relatively busy with only two booths vacant. I ordered the meat lover’s omelet that contained big chunks of bacon, Italian sausage, ham and cheese served with four pieces of toast for $6.99 along with a side of home fries for an additional $1.75. The omelet was not overly salted and was very tasty, and the ingredients were fresh. My friend ordered the veal and eggplant parmesan special for $8.95, which included a choice of a small salad — which was anything but small — or a cup of soup. She felt that the veal was right on point along with the homemade Italian red sauce, but felt the …

There is nothing like ice cream on a hot summer day and Sundaes at 95 Greenville Ave. — well, it doesn’t get any better. First of all, there is a bordering-on-excessive amount of flavor and topping combinations for hard ice cream and soft-serve. They’ve got some excellent frozen yogurt, slushes and even Dole-whip for the lactose intolerant crowd. Whether by cup or by cone, a Sundaes ice cream treat is the best way to wrap up a meal or just to beat the summer heat. A friend and I decided to go light, as we had dined heavily just a few minutes beforehand. I opted for a small vanilla soft-serve with the hard chocolate shell ($2.25) and my buddy opted for a small blue raspberry slush ($1.25). Both of us concluded that this was a bad idea — not…

Sometimes you want just a sandwich. However, there is nothing “just” about This Guy’s Pizza’s The Frenchman sandwich. Really, this is everything I could want in a sandwich. It’s hearty, it’s creative and has a secret sauce on it that compliments it perfectly. Built upon a hearty 12” sub roll are heaped amounts of chicken, bacon, onions, ham and cheese. The Frenchman sandwich ($6.99) has a sauce poured on it is not an au jus like with a French dip, but a combination of sweet and tangy flavor that works well with the onions and the chicken especially. As a side, because I was obviously watching my calories, I ordered some onion rings ($3.99) with their famous Buff-A-Q sauce, a clever hybrid of buffalo and barbecue sauce, which is quite tasty…

The Little Rhody Breakfast and Lunch Café is more than just a local wiener joint. It also serves up the finest Monte Cristo sandwich this reviewer has eaten. Nestled in behind the Little Rhody distribution center at 5 Day Street, off of Killingly Street, this eatery has your common breakfast fare and lunch favorites. This morning, I was going for low-cal, so I naturally opted for the Monte Cristo. Between two golden-fried, egg-battered pieces of French toast were ham steak, sausage and finely melted Swiss cheese. Served with homefries and an eye-opening cup of coffee, this option targeted my usual two key areas – hunger and decaffeination — and at $7.99, you just cannot go wrong. Space is limited inside the restaurant, but I did not …

Two is better than one seems to be the philosophy at Brewed Awakenings. Two locations, less than a half-mile apart on Atwood Avenue, serve up some of the finest coffee this sleepy-eyed reviewer has ever had. I am a creature of habit, so I went to the Brewed I have been going to for over 11 years, at 1395 Atwood Ave. The other location is near the Johnston High School and Johnston Police Station at 1577 Atwood Ave. Promptly greeted by a perky and persistently pleasant cashier, my order was taken with a smile and a “Hi, how are you?” I was slightly disappointed that they did not have my favorite roast of coffee on tap today, but the cashier immediately said it was not a problem and she would brew it fresh for me – bonus points! Since I was …

Homefries Restaurant serves up an impressive three-egg omelette that not only is affordable, it’s sizable. The restaurant is staffed with friendly waitresses who never let my mug run halfway down before warming me up with some freshly-brewed coffee. The restaurant at 10 a.m. was quite busy for a Wednesday, but this did not detract from the prompt and pleasant service. From the menu, for one: The omelette was very light, despite being chock full of ingredients. It was served with deliciously crisp and lightly seasoned home fries, as well as two-pieces of lightly buttered rye toast. Other things to note about Homefries: Total bill: one Western omelette, one cup of coffee $7.66 x 20-percent = $9.19

Meetings always go better on a full stomach, and Chief’s Diner is certainly the place to go if you want to be full. My dining companion and I were in total agreement on this. The meal sizes were plentiful, and the prices were right where they should be for a diner – affordable. From the menu, for two: The eggs were the best example of over-medium I’ve had to date, not too yolky, not too firm – spot-on here. The hash was tasty but was not my ideal “extra crispy.” If you want really well-done hash, I guess you have to stress it a bit more. The monkey bread French toast is quite a treat; think of the center of a cinnamon roll, basted in egg and grilled — an absolute must-try. My fellow diner enjoyed his French toast and his sausage, as it was…

I have a huge appetite first thing in the morning, so breakfast is always on my mind when I wake up. I have met my match, something I cannot eat by myself – and that’s the breakfast at English Muffin. My guest and I decided to split an omlette, with an additional order of toast and split an order of stuffed French toast. Truthfully, I am glad we did, because despite splitting, neither of us cleaned our plates. The portions here are huge and filling, so do not come with a light appetite. Sampling from the menu: Restaurant was surprisingly quiet when we arrived around 9:30 a.m., but began to fill in. Waitstaff are attentive and persistently pleasant, which helped ease my stomach’s growl due to the delay in the kitchen. Other things to note: …

On Wednesdays, something calls out to my stomach – it is usually clam cakes and New England clam chowder, so I rolled into the Cherry Hill Grille, since I’ve heard murmurings about how great it is. Trust me — they did not disappoint in the slightest. Let me start off by saying this restaurant was packed on my visit. Every table, booth and barstool – save one – was filled. It was good fortune that I arrived when I did. Despite how busy this place was around noontime, the service was incredibly prompt and attentive, and I did not wait for anything. Refills on my beverage, extra napkins — the waitstaff are exceptionally well-orchestrated. They even have time for some light conversation. A sampling from the Wednesday menu, for one: The bowl of…

Whether you want to take out a hot meal or eat in at Luigi's Restaurant & Gourmet Express, you’ll be treated to the same family tradition of Italian specialties for lunch or dinner — and it’ll make you want to come back for more. Luigi's food is fresh-made every day, and the dishes come from old Battista family recipes. All the breads, desserts, soups and sauces are all made from scratch. When asked what was the most popular lunch, owner Ralph Battista said the chicken parmigiana sandwich is a top seller. Luigi's is famous for other lunch specials, including: Luigi's also has a large menu of wraps or choice of garlic, herbs or whole wheat breads, and personalized pizza with baked or grilled crusts.
