The Johnston School Committee voted 5-0 to appoint Doreen Studley to the part-time position, which pays $45,000 plus benefits.
During a brief meeting on Tuesday night at Ferri Middle School, the Johnston School Committee approved the appointment of Doreen Studley to the part-time Human Resources Coordinator position that had been left unfilled since last November. According to Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo, Studley will be paid $45,000 per year plus benefits for the 30-hour-per-week job, which handles all of the school district's employment applications and ensures adherence to hiring standards. "She'll be in charge of hiring, monitoring benefits for people, and will be involved in grievances," DiLullo explained. In separate votes, board members also approved the contract for Studley, and approved a policy that requires all employment applications to be forwarded to …

But state Sen. Frank Lombardo said the bill may re-emerge later this year.
Johnston School Committee member Robert LaFazia said he's relieved that the Rhode Island House of Representatives decided not to hear the controversial binding arbitration bill. Prior to the decision to suspend consideration of the bill, LaFazia and other …

Johnston Sen. Frank Lombardo III, who voted against a measure to impose binding arbitration for teachers contracts, said the bill's prospects are less than certain.
As the state Senate this week took up a bill that would impose binding arbitration for teachers' contracts, officials in Johnston were watching the developments with concern. Johnston Sen. Frank Lombardo, interviewed by phone on June 30, said he felt the bill faces an uncertain future. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves," the first-term senator said. "The House would have to pass it, and the governor has publicly stated that he's not comfortable signing it — and after the vote in the Senate yesterday, there are not enough votes to overturn a veto." In a vote recorded just before 11 p.m. on June 29, the Senate voted 20-17, with one absention, to approve the arbitration bill. The House of Representatives had not taken up the bill by …
