Veterans Day: What's Open, What's Closed in Johnston?

All government offices, schools and libraries are closed today for the observance of Veterans Day; most businesses are open.

Today is the federal observance of Veterans Day, a federal holiday that recognizes the nation's service men and women.  All federal, state and Johnston government buildings and offices are closed today. There will be no mail service. Johnston schools are closed, as well. Trash pick-up in Johnston is delayed one day in observance of the Veterans’ Day holiday on Monday, November 12, 2012. Most restaurant and stores will be open their regular hours today, but you might want to call ahead. Banks vary, but most are closed. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority will operate under its holiday schedule today. To view schedules, click here. Do Veterans Get Enough Recognition?

Do America's veterans receive enough recognition for their service?

Sunday, November 11th was Veterans Day, although it is being officially recognized on Monday, Nov. 12, by the federal government. Whichever day you prefer, it is a day for honoring veterans of  America's armed forces. But for millions of Americans, it's treated as just another holiday on the calendar – a day off from school, a day out of work, a three-day weekend. In towns and cities across America, grizzled veterans, Boy Scouts, politicians and a handful of others will attend small, quiet services. Is that enough? Do we as Americans do enough to recognize the nation's service men and women and the sacrifices they made and the responsibilities they took on to go to war or serve for us? Video: Quidnesset Country Club Luncheon To Benefit Holly Charette House

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island and 630 WPRO hosted the first annual "Women Warriors" luncheon and fundraiser to benefit the Holy Charette House in Johnston.

Quidnesset Country Club was the site for the first annual "Women Warriors" luncheon, which raised funds for the Holly Charette House, a transitional housing facility in Johnston for female veterans operated by Operation Stand Down Rhode Island. The accompanying video shows scenes from the event, including speeches by U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, distinguished female veterans, and Charette's parents.
