Stop & Shop Gas Station Opens

Nearly 10 months to the day since the former Newport Creamery closed at 1410 Atwood Ave., a new gas station opened at the site on Wednesday morning.

Completing a process that began last spring, Mayor Joseph Polisena, local officials, and representatives of Stop & Shop formally marked the opening of a new gas station at 1410 Atwood Ave. on Wednesday morning. The location had been the site of a Newport Creamery restaurant, which closed in July, 2012, and was demolished in December. Newport Creamery in Johnston Demolished

Workers using heavy wrecking machines reduced the former landmark restaurant on Atwood Avenue to a pile of rubble on Tuesday.

Moving one step closer to the construction of a new Stop & Shop gas station on Atwood Avenue, workers from Dixon Inc. of Northborough, MA, completed the demolition of the former Newport Creamery restaurant on Tuesday. The removal of the building is part of a $1.5 million project by Carpionato Associates of Johnston, and follows the June 30 closing of the restaurant. Attached to this article is a 1-minute video of the demolition set to a hard rock soundtrack.   WARNING: Video includes loud music.

Zoning Board Of Review — July 28

Plans for a Stop & Shop gas station on Atwood Avenue are among the items on tonight's agenda.

The Johnston Zoning Board of Review is scheduled to meet tonight and consider an application by Stop & Shop for a permit to place a gas station at the current site of Newport Creamery on Atwood Avenue. Last month, the town's planning board approved the proposal to tear down the restaurant and replace it with a gas station. The agenda for tonight's meeting is attached to this article.
