Hoping to Attend St. Rocco's? Tuition Program Helps Defray the Cost

The Diocese of Providence recently announced that it's accepting applications for the Financial Aid for Children’s Education of Rhode Island (FACE) program.

Students looking to attend one of Rhode Island's 42 Catholic schools — including St. Rocco School in Johnston — can get some help with tuition through the Diocese of Providence's Financial Aid for Children’s Education of Rhode Island (FACE) program. Gena Bianco-Robbins, a Johnston resident, is the director of the program. In a recent email message, she outlined some of the program's specifics, including eligibility requirements. The FACE program is directed at students in households with income of less than 250 percent of the federal poverty standard, Bianco-Robbins explained, with their need also verified by a third party. During the current school year, 162 students out of a total of 4,947 who received financial aid were through FACE…

Photo Gallery: All Saints Day at St. Rocco School

Students dressed as their favorite saints for the Feast of All Saints Day at St. Rocco Church on Nov. 1.

First-graders at St. Rocco School celebrated the Feast of All Saints on Nov. 1 by dressing as different saints for the annual All Saints Day Mass. Alfred Monaco, who has been the school's assistant principal for five years, said the first graders have been dressing as saints for the mass for many years. Students in the two first grade classes, taught by Lori Sweeney and Maryann Bennett, all participated by choosing a saint and dressing as that saint for the Mass, and wrote a report about their saint. Check out the accompanying photo gallery for scenes from the All Saints Mass at St. Rocco Church.

Lorraine Moschella started in her new position on Oct. 3, the Diocese of Providence announced.

In a press release issued Oct. 5, the Diocese of Providence announced that Lorraine Moschella, who most recently served as principal of L. McGuire School in North Providence, has been named the new principal of St. Rocco School. Moschella succeeds Magdalen Chianese, who left the position just before the end of the school year in June. “As a parent who has personally observed the benefits of a Catholic education, I am pleased with this appointment to serve St. Rocco Parish, school parents and students,” Moschella is quoted as saying in the release. “I have long appreciated the spirit and charity that a parochial education offers and feel it is a natural progression of my professional and spiritual life to be drawn to a career as a principal…

Photo Gallery: First Day Of School [Finally!]

Students at Thornton Elementary and St. Rocco's School arrived for their first day of school, which had been rescheduled from last week.

On Sept. 6, Johnston students went back to school. They were originally scheduled to go back on Aug. 31, but school officials postponed the start date because of continued power outages and concerns about transporting students. As the early morning rain fell, children and their parents — armed with rain coats, umbrellas and backpacks — marched into the school doors to start their new year. For preschoolers at St. Rocco School, it was their first day of school, as the older grades started school on Sept. 1. JohnstonPatch stopped by St. Rocco and Thornton Elementary Schools to catch these glimpses of the first day of school.
