[VIDEO] Johnston Officials to Pursue Owners Who Claim Out-of-Town Kids

Mayor Joseph Polisena, school Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo, and town Code Enforcement Officer Peter DelPonte address the issue of non-residents attending local schools.

This morning at Johnston Town Hall, Mayor Joseph Polisena issued what he termed "a stern warning" to homeowners who claim that out-of-town students are living at their homes: "If you're allowing this, you will pay financially — and you will pay dearly." Polisena announced the town's efforts to identify residential property owners who allow non-Johnston families to claim their homes as residences — and withdraw the town's 20-percent homestead tax exemption and impose a $500-per-day fine on those who are found. The accompanying video includes excerpts from today's press conference, including Polisena, school Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo, and town Code Enforcement Officer Peter DelPonte speaking about the issue. DiLullo explained that the …

Mayor Joseph Polisena issued a pledge this morning to locate — and penalize — Johnston homeowners who claim that out-of-town children are living at their homes.

Homeowners in Johnston who list out-of-town children as residents — typically done to enroll the students in Johnston schools — will face fines and a loss of their homestead exemption when they're discovered, Mayor Joseph Polisena announced this morning at Johnston Town Hall. "We will go after these people, who are trying to rip off the system, with a vengeance," Polisena explained. "When we catch you — and we will catch you — the homeowner will pay." Polisena held a press conference this morning with town and school officials to outline the measures being taken against homeowners who are found to be letting out-of-town families claim their addresses as a residence. "I guess we're being penalized because Johnston has great schools," …

Polisena Looks to Stop Out-of-Town Kids Attending Johnston Schools

Mayor Joseph Polisena has scheduled a 9 am press conference this morning at Town Hall.

In an effort to ensure that only Johnston residents are attending local schools, Mayor Joseph Polisena has scheduled a press conference for 9 am this morning at Johnston Town Hall to announce steps that local officials will be taking against homeowners who are found listing their home addresses as the residence of children who, in reality, don't live in town. "People are registering kids who are not living in Johnston," Polisena explained during a recent interview, adding that the town may pursue fines and elimination of the homestead exemption [a 20 percent reduction in the assessed valuation of a home] against property owners who use their addresses improperly. Polisena said he has invited school Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo and other …
