5 Things To Know Today

May 17: Sun, Study, Beach, Camp, Faire

A bright forecast, a lack of passes, and sign-ups for summer camp check in on the list of 5 Things To Know Today.

Sun: Finally! We're in for clearing skies and sun, according to the JohnstonPatch WeatherBug forecast. Highs near 70 today, clear overnight with temps in the mid-40s. Copy & paste the forecast through the weekend. Study: In a survey of 51 Rhode Island high schools published by GoLocalProv.com, JHS ranked 26th. Fair? Unfair? Post your comments and have your say. Beach: That's where you'll have to go for season passes to state-run beaches this year, since the Johnston office of the DEM won't be selling them. Camp: There's less than a month to go until the end of the school year in Johnston — sign up the kids for day camp at Johnston Memorial Park. No Beach Passes for Sale in Johnston

The state Department of Environmental Management announced that season passes will only be available at state beaches this year.

Three state-run beaches in Washington County opened last weekend, with several more set to open over the next few weeks — but if you're looking to buy a beach pass at the Department of Environmental Management office in Johnston, you're out of luck. In a statement on its website, DEM states that season passes will be available at Scarborough North, Roger Wheeler, and Misquamicut state beaches on weekends only until Memorial Day — but not at the Hartford Avenue office. Last May, the local DEM office ran out of beach passes in advance of an increase in fees approved by Gov. Lincoln Chafee. The 2012 rates for beach passes are: All state beaches will open daily after Memorial Day, the DEM reported.

Plans to help a local girl in her fight against cancer, a poll on same-sex marriage, and a look back at a special honor for local kids score spots on your 5 Things To Know Today.

Team: On June 2, ACI Customs is set to host a Bike and Car show and motorcycle run to benefit Pink Heals and Jenna Jacques, a 9-year-old girl from Johnston. Check out or video on the announcement. Marriage: What do you think? Is it time for Rhode Island to approve same-sex marriage? Cast your vote and have your say on this big issue. Rain: If only our apology could change the JohnstonPatch WeatherBug forecast — alas, it can not. More rain on tap with highs in the lower 70s. Clearing expected on Thursday. Beach: The state DEM announced that its Johnston office won't be selling season beach passes this year, which means you'll have to go "all that way" to a Washington County beach to get one. Revs: On this date last year, we posted a photo …
