The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation outlines recycling tips as Easter Sunday approaches.

As Rhode Islanders make plans to celebrate the Easter holiday, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is reminding residents that many of the prized, colorful favors that go hand-in-hand with the holiday are not recyclable. In an effort to streamline operations at RIRRC’s Materials Recycling Facility, the agency has outlined a handful of helpful recycling tips.  “In the days surrounding the Easter holiday, our Materials Recycling Facility receives an influx of materials that simply cannot be recycled,” said Sarah Kite, Director of Recycling Services for RIRRC. “From Easter baskets to artificial grass and candy wrappers, many residents are unaware that these materials cannot be recycled. RIRRC to Hold Eco-Depot This Saturday

RI Residents are urged to make an appointment and dispose of any hazardous materials they may have at home.

  The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will host a special waste collection on site at the Central Landfill (65 Shun Pike) on Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. until noon. The free collection will allow Rhode Island residents to dispose of their household hazardous waste in a safe manner. Household hazardous waste is collected separately from the state’s Central Landfill in order to protect humans, animals and the local environment. These are products that have warning labels indicating they are dangerous to human health because they are flammable, caustic, combustible or toxic. Common household hazardous waste items include fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based paint, mercury thermometers, used motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, …

Sewer Line Install Work Concluding

As a results, look out for detours on Central Avenue, Dawn Drive and Earl Drive this week.

According to a press release from a project manager from the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, the final work on a sewer line on Central Avenue, Dawn Drive and Earl Drive takes places from Monday to Wednesday this week. Peter J. Connell, a project manager for RIRRC, said a crew will be out today and tomorrow – weather permitting – to finish the final 100 feet of a gravity sewer pipe on Central Avenue near Dawn Drive. On Wednesday, the crew will relocate to 417 Central Avenue, and work toward Earl Drive. On all three days, crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., although they might be out as late as 5 p.m. if complications arise. The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation will host two eco-depot collections in January in Johnston.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation will host two special waste collections on site at the Central Landfill during the first month of 2013. These free Eco-Depot collections will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 12. Rhode Islanders are encouraged to attend the collection at the Central Landfill at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston, where RIRRC officials will accept and dispose of their household hazardous waste. See Where Johnston's Recycling Goes

Rhode Island Resource Recovery recently added a "virtual tour" of its Materials Recycling Facility to its "Recycle Together RI" website.

  Earlier this year, the town of Johnston received a check from Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation for almost $43,000, representing nearly 2,000 tons of recyclables processed at the Central Landfill over the previous year. That payment also followed the unveiling of a new $17 million recycling system that allows residents to send recyclables to the Landfill without separating them — and this week, RIRRC posted  a "virtual tour" of the Materials Recycling Facility online. Central Avenue Road Closure in Effect

The entrance to Central Avenue at Atwood Avenue will be shut down for installation of a sewer line.

  Following last week's partial closure and traffic restrictions on Atwood Avenue, a portion of Central Avenue will be closed to most vehicles this week as a $4 million sewer project continues. Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is funding the work to run a new sewer line down Central Avenue and connect with the Narragansett Bay Commission's wastewater treatment system. The lead contractor on the project, Parkside Utility Construction Corp., issued an advisory to local residents and drivers about this week's work — it's attached to this article. Traffic on Atwood Avenue at Central has been diverted because of an ongoing sewer project.

  Drivers heading west on Atwood Avenue at Central Avenue [in front of 1302 Marketplace] have been dealing with lane restrictions for the past couple of days. Wondering why? It's the latest phase of the $4 million sewer installation project by Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, the management company for the Central Landfill. According to a notice released by Parkside Utility Construction, the contractor for the installation, crews are installing the tie-in from the new sewer line to the Narragansett Bay Commission system. Drivers looking to use Central Avenue as a cut-through from Atwood Avenue to Reservoir Avenue will need to find detours — at least from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

  With work continuing on Central Avenue to install a new sewer line as part of a $4 million project by Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, restrictions on through-traffic will remain in place for at least the next four to six weeks. On Friday afternoon, RIRRC officials provided JohnstonPatch with the notice sent to residents near the area of the work zone near the I-295 overpass, between Dawn Drive and Old Pocasset Road.
