Great Escape: Spring Is In The Air

The circus is coming to town, along with great musicals and concerts.

Spring is in full swing, and you need to get out. And while there aren't many outdoor activities just yet, there are still lots of great things to see and do in the area. After you've had your fill for dinner, there's plenty to do this weekend.

Bites Nearby: Chief's Diner

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.

Meetings always go better on a full stomach, and Chief’s Diner is certainly the place to go if you want to be full. My dining companion and I were in total agreement on this. The meal sizes were plentiful, and the prices were right where they should be for a diner – affordable. From the menu, for two: The eggs were the best example of over-medium I’ve had to date, not too yolky, not too firm – spot-on here. The hash was tasty but was not my ideal “extra crispy.” If you want really well-done hash, I guess you have to stress it a bit more. The monkey bread French toast is quite a treat; think of the center of a cinnamon roll, basted in egg and grilled — an absolute must-try. My fellow diner enjoyed his French toast and his sausage, as it was…

Bites Nearby: English Muffin

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.

I have a huge appetite first thing in the morning, so breakfast is always on my mind when I wake up. I have met my match, something I cannot eat by myself – and that’s the breakfast at English Muffin. My guest and I decided to split an omlette, with an additional order of toast and split an order of stuffed French toast. Truthfully, I am glad we did, because despite splitting, neither of us cleaned our plates. The portions here are huge and filling, so do not come with a light appetite. Sampling from the menu: Restaurant was surprisingly quiet when we arrived around 9:30 a.m., but began to fill in. Waitstaff are attentive and persistently pleasant, which helped ease my stomach’s growl due to the delay in the kitchen. Other things to note: …

Bites Nearby: Wasabi Japanese Sushi Bar & Restaurant

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally owned eatery.

It is an extreme challenge for me to find quality sushi; it is even harder for me to find a $19.99 all-you-can-eat sushi dinner special, yet I have done it — no — Wasabi Japanese Sushi Bar & Restaurant has done it. On Monday ($19.99) and Tuesday ($24.99) nights Wasabi offers all-you-can-eat sushi dinners. The dinners include endless side dishes, such as: miso soup, nime chow and Asian chicken wings. With about 13 different maki rolls to choose from, a sushi lover can delight in the presentation, freshness and, of course, bottomless options. From the menu, for two: Other things to note about Wasabi: Total bill for two sushi specials: $43.18 + 20-percent tip = $51.82   (Author’s Note: While this seems pricier than my usual local-eatery wrap-…

Great Escape: St Patrick's Day, Mozart, and Metal

Here are some ideas to help you celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

We're getting closer to St. Patrick's Day, and with that in mind, I chose some casual establishments where you can enjoy some good food and good drinks. Of course, I had to include a few traditional Irish taverns. If you're still in the mood to celebrate, there are lots of diverse options, so you're bound to like something.
