DOT: Delays Expected Sunday On Rte. 295 During Work For New Traffic Pattern

Workers to set up new traffic pattern between exits 9 and 10.

OK, Smithfield drivers — plan your Sunday travels carefully, and be prepared for some changes if you're headed north on Rte. 295.  As part of the reconstruction of the Blackstone Viaduct between Exit 9 (Route 146) and Exit 10 (Route 122/Mendon Road) on I-295 in Cumberland/Lincoln, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has announced overnight work to set up a new traffic pattern will start Sunday, Nov, 18 at about 9 p.m. According to the DOT, Motorists should expect delays. The new traffic pattern should be in effect by the morning commute on Monday, Nov. 19.  With the new traffic pattern, the left high speed lane will be closed, with the two existing right lanes of the I-295 Northbound mainline remaining open. RIDOT Urges Motorists to Be Careful As Hurricane Cleanup Begins

Power outages and tree damage may limit travel.

  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is urging residents to drive cautiously today, particularly in South County, which saw the highest winds, flooding, power outages and tree damage from Hurricane Sandy. National Grid reported 1,360 outages in Johnston as of 9:35 Tuesday morning. Although the storm has passed, there may be roads still blocked by debris. Even streets that are passable may be partially restricted by trees or crews working to restore power or fully clear the roads. The Department especially wants to urge drivers and pedestrians to be wary of any downed power lines, which may be live. “There is a temptation after a storm like this to get out and view the damage,” RIDOT Director Michael P. I live at the intersection of Hartford Ave and Brown Ave in Johnston and the light is not working.No police have been present and noone is treating it as any kind of stop intersection.The amount of accidents there is well known,so why isn't it being treated as a high priority.Put a cop there or get the light operating now please to avoid a serious traffic danger.   more ›

Road Work Scheduled on Rt. 6 Tomorrow

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation issued an advisory for maintenance work scheduled for tomorrow starting at 9 am.

  Tomorrow morning's commute from Johnston into Providence could be slowed by scheduled maintenance on Rt. 6, announced Friday afternoon by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. In its weekly traffic forecast, RIDOT noted that the left lane of Rt. 6 from the I-295 interchange to Rt. 10 on the Providence line is expected to be closed from 9 am to 2 pm on Monday. The lane restriction is scheduled for both eastbound and westbound travel on Rt. 6. RIDOT also announced that the right lane of Rt. 6 East near the Rt. 10 exit will be closed from 9 am to 2 pm to allow for bridge work, and that there may be lane closures on Westminster Street. Truck With Turbine Parts To Roll Through Town

A series of oversized loads is scheduled to drive through Johnston this week on its way to Interstate 295.

A series of oversized loads carrying wind turbine parts to Boston, MA, are expected to use Johnston roads this week. [Note: These are not parts for the proposed turbines in Johnston. The applications for two turbines in Johnston have not yet been heard, and there is no schedule for consideration of the proposals.] Starting around 9 a.m., a convoy heading towards Boston was scheduled to depart Terminal Road in Providence and head towards Interstate 295 using streets in Johnston and Cranston.
