SUSPICIOUS FIRE Officials are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out on March 9 on South Olney Street. Police said a passerby called in the fire, which he saw while traveling on Route 6. Police tracked it down to the house at 12 S. Olney St. Officer Joseph M. Schichilone Jr. reported that he attempted to kick in the front door but couldn't because of the icy porch. The fire department responded a few minutes later and quickly put out the fire. Later, police were told by fire officials that the fire appears to have started on the rear steps of the house. Officials took samples of debris on the stairs for analysis. Police said a resident of the house told police she thinks her boyfriend set the fire. Police said the boyfriend, who …

U-HAUL NOT RETURNED Johnston Police tracked down a missing U-Haul that was never returned to Carrara’s Auto Clinic on Atwood Avenue and charged a former Johnston man who never returned it with obtaining a vehicle with intent to defraud. According to a police report, Kerry E. Raso, 43, of 19 Lexington Road, North Kingstown, reportedly rented a U-Haul truck on Dec. 15 and was supposed to return it on Dec. 16 but never returned. Carrara’s owner, David Carrara, told police that he tried to contact Raso from Dec. 17 to Jan. 9 via telephone and certified mail with no luck. Vargas, 20, of 30 John St., Cranston, with felony assault with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct Feb. 12 for allegedly hitting a man in the face with an aluminum baseball bat during an altercation. According to a police report, police responded to 1266 Plainfield Street for a report of a large disturbance in the second floor apartment. Upon arrival, police heard what sounded like a fight going on inside. Once inside, police saw two men in the midst of a fight. B&E Johnston Police are investigating a breaking and entering that occurred in an apartment on Jan. 28 at 2800 Hartford Ave. According to police, the victim called police to report the break-in after he came home around 10:45 a.m. — about an hour-and-a-half after he left in the morning. Police said the suspect broke a glass door behind the building to get inside the apartment. Once inside, the suspect stole a Nintendo Wii console, a 37-inch TV, laptop, safe, Xbox 360 console, five katana swords and other items. Police are investigating. COPPER THEFT Johnston Police reported the theft of copper from a vacant house on Pinehill Road on Jan. 25. Police said a property inspector went to the house at 65 Pinehill Road to winterize the home. …

DISMEMBERMENT THREATS Johnston Police charged a 21-year-old Cranston man with domestic disorderly conduct and violating a no-contact order after he allegedly threatened to “hack up” and dismember a Johnston woman with whom he had a former relationship. According to police, Joshua Michael Carey, of 19 Woodland Ave., Cranston, allegedly sent several text messages directed to the woman through a friend’s cell phone. In the messages, he threatened to “brutally murder [the woman] and dismember her body.” Police said Carey used one of his friend’s cell phones to send the text messages and the victim was sure it was Carey because he reportedly called the same number he was texting on a restricted number and made threats similar in nature to the …

LEAVING THE SCENE A 21-year-old Johnston woman was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after she allegedly changed her mind about going to Taco Bell and smashed into another car when she made an abrupt u-turn on Hartford Avenue, leaving behind her bumper – complete with license plate – and a hit-and-run victim. According to police, Ashley Cote, 21, of 283 Borden Ave., Johnston, was en-route to Taco Bell, driving in front of a car driven by a N. Attleborough, Mass., woman along Hartford Avenue. Near Robert Corio Jewelers, Cote reportedly changed her mind about the fast food and “suddenly pulled a U-turn” by pulling into the parking lot of the jewelers and back onto Hartford Avenue at a high rate of speed, according to an accident…

MARIJUANA A 25-year-old Johnston man was charged with marijuana possession Dec. 28 after a routine traffic stop sparked by an officer noticing his passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt. According to police, Richard A. Naud, of 26 Victor Ave., was stopped while driving his Ford Mustang because his passenger was unbuckled. The officer reportedly smelled marijuana when he approached the vehicle. A check of Naud’s information showed he was wanted on an active Superior Court bench warrant for failing to appear on a drug possession charge. Naud was asked to exit his vehicle. DRIVING ON COCAINE Johnston Police charged a 43-year-old Johnston man with disorderly conduct, weapon law violations and driving under the influence Dec. 13 after a traffic stop on Plainfield Street. Police said Joseph M. Noury, of 16 Alcazar Ave., was stopped for driving without a front license plate. Once stopped, Noury burst out of the car and began ripping his shirts off. Police talked Noury back into his car and said his hands were shaking and a dollar bill was seen on the floor with a white powdery substance, which led police to believe he was under the influence of cocaine. The following information was provided by Johnston Police. It does not indicate a conviction. B&E Johnston Police responded to 1208 Atwood Ave. Dec. 8 for a report of a breaking and entering into an unoccupied building. Upon arrival, police met with Michael Schultz, who is renting the building, who said that when he got there at 9 a.m., he discovered an interior door was open and the glass had been shattered. After looking more, he found that $1,700 worth of tools were missing. Police said the building is in the process of being renovated into a working garage.
