Johnston Parish to Celebrate 100 Years of Community Service

Guests are invited to a celebratory anniversary ceremony on Saturday morning.

  On Sunday, Jan. 27, the parish community of Our Lady of Grace will come together to commemorate the 100th anniversary of their church, located on George Waterman Road in Johnston. The Most Rev. Robert C. Evans, Auxiliary Bishop of Providence, will celebrate a Mass at 10:30 a.m. and Rev. Msgr. Carlo F. Montecalvo, pastor of the parish will concelebrate the Mass along with other clergy. According to a release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence Office of Communications, the parish of Our Lady of Grace began as a mission of the Church of the Holy Ghost in 1912. Five months later, Bishop Matthew Harkins established the church of Our Lady of Grace on Jan. 24, 1913, after he determined that a resident pastor was needed due to the …

Americo D'Amico Jr.: Longtime Worker at Stop & Shop

The Johnston resident passed away on Dec. 3, 2012.

  Americo D'Amico Jr., 86, of Johnston, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Angela (Petracca) D'Amico. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Americo and Maria (Macchio) D'Amico. Americo retired as a meat cutter for Stop and Shop after 26 years. Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his loving children, Raymond D'Amico and his wife, Patricia; Jane Caserta and her husband, Robert; Bobby D'Amico and his wife, Mary; and Steven D'Amico and his wife, Shelly; a sister, Anna D'Amico, and 13 adoring grandchildren. Annmarie [Izzo] Cherella: Johnston School Lunch Program Employee

The Johnston native passed away on Oct. 24, 2012.

  Annmarie [Izzo] Cherella, 67, of Johnston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence. Annmarie was the beloved wife of the late Matthew L. Cherella, and the former wife of the late Nicholas J. Carlone. Born in Johnston, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Lena (Parrillo) Izzo. Annmarie was employed by Aramark Corp. in the Johnston School Department Lunch Program for two years.  She is survived by her loving children, Nicholas J. Carlone III and his wife, Melanie, of Ringe, NH; Michael G. Carlone of Johnston; Karen Cherella of Massachusetts; and Anthony Cherella of Johnston. Our Lady of Grace Feast — Sept. 8

The annual Italian Feast and Festival kicks off tonight at 5 p.m.

Our Lady of Grace Church opens its 2011 Italian Feast and Festival honoring the Madonna Della DiFesa this afternoon at 5 p.m. in the "festival field" on Sherman Avenue behind the church. This marks the 103rd year since the founding of the feast society, named for the hilltop in Italy where, according to legend, four men who had seen the Virgin Mary in a dream later met each other on the hilltop and discovered skeletons, the remains of a chapel, an altar, and a marble inscription — as they had been promised in their dream.
