A temporary relocation of the staff at Johnston Municipal Court, a slow day at the polls, and officials appealing to the General Assembly were among the headlines for the week ending Apr. 27.
Court Moves: With the finishing touches to the Johnston Municipal Court happening slower than he liked, Mayor Joseph Polisena announced that he'd decided to move the court staff to the parks and recreation office after court hearings so the work to the lower level of the courthouse could be completed more quickly. Chamber Event: On Tuesay, we posted our video from the North Central Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event, held at the Johnston Historical Society. It was a great example of local organizations getting together, according to the organizers. Primary Vote: In a case where the result actually matched the predictions, Mitt Romney won in the Rhode Island Presidential primary on Tuesday where only 236 Johnston voters …

Hope High School. Parking Ban: At their meeting Monday night, Johnston Town Councilors formally added Barnes Avenue to the list of streets where parking is banned, in response to Mayor Joseph Polisena's concern that rescue vehicles ay not have been able to get down the street in an emergency because of parents parking in the roadway as they waited for their kids to leave school. Vandals Named: Mayor Joseph Polisena and Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini on Wednesday announced the results of the investigation into…

Vandalism: Someone — or some group of someones — apparently drove a vehicle or vehicles onto two local sports fields last weekend. Mayor Joseph Polisena, clearly upset by the damage, held a press conference Monday at the town soccer complex to tour the damage and vow that the culprits would be caught. We also noted that the surveillance camera at the complex may have recorded some of the incident — and awaited official word on whether any arrests had been made. Gas Pump: The new town-owned gas filling station at the Johnston Police Department neared completion this week, with a canopy installed and Gill Services workers digging the footing for a new paved driveway. Playoffs: I'm stepping outside of my editorial box for just a minute to …

It's your weekly wrap-up of the stories that made the news on JohnstonPatch for the week ending March 2.
Sports: They may have wrapped their regular season in uneven fashion (1-1 in the final two), but the Lady Panthers used the home court to their advantage against West Warwick on Feb. 29, recovering from a 9-point deficit at the half to beat the Lady Wizards, 60-56 and advance to the quarterfinals. (Watch Monday for results from Saturday night's game.) Snow: We had a wintry mess blow through the area on Wednesday night, following the forecast issued by the National Weather Service pretty well. Tank: In about a month, the town of Johnston is expected to have a new gas filling station up and running at the Johnston Police Department — and we posted our video on Tuesday of the delivery of the 8,000-gal. tank. Volunteers: We kicked off a new …

Fundraisers: We reported on Tuesday that two fundraising efforts to help the Dorego children netted $13,000 as of this week, with more expected in the next few weeks. Audit: At Monday night's town council meeting, auditor Bob Civetti announced that Johnston finished fiscal 2011 in good shape — better, in fact, than most neighboring communities. Score: It's only happened seven times in the history of Johnston High School, and we were there as Ryan Anderson achieved the 1,000-point milestone for his varsity high school basketball career. Wreck: Did …

More Stink? Pay Up: The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management on Thursday announced a $55,000 fine against the two companies that operate at the Central Landfill. DEM officials said Rhode Island Resource Recovery and Broadrock Gas Services had failed to properly fix the problems that led to an ongoing odor problem. Also this week, the Providence Journal reported that RIRRC's board of directors had approved a plan to get rid of seagulls, including possibly shooting at the pests.
