Children's Social Skills Series to Begin at Mohr Library

The series will run each Saturday from Apr. 6 to May 18.

  Learning good social skills is an important part of every child's life, especially once they have reached school-age. Sharing, problem-solving and holding polite, conversation are everyday skills needed for productive development and Mohr Library (1 Memorial Ave.) is giving Johnston children the chance to interact with one another in an interactive, structured setting. The "Breakfast Bunch" is a free social skills group designed for children ages 6 to 8 years old, featuring games, crafts and fun activities. Two school psychology doctoral students will lead the six-week program, scheduled for Saturdays, Apr. 6, 13, 20 and May 4, 11 and 18 from 10-11:30 a.m. Registration is required. Easter Bunny to Hop Into Johnston

A free Easter egg hunt and bunny visit are scheduled for March 30, 2013.

  Spring is officially here, which means it's almost time for the Easter Bunny to make his rounds! On Saturday, March 30, children ages 5 and under are invited to meet the Easter Bunny from 9-11 a.m. at Johnston Memorial Park. At 11:30, children ages 6-8 can participate in a free Easter Egg Hunt (also at the Park), hosted by Johnston's Parks and Recreation Department. Families are also welcome to visit Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library (1 Memorial Ave., Johnston) before or after the Easter events at Johnston Memorial Park (1583 Hartford Ave.) to decorate egg-shaped cookies, makes Easter crafts and participate in a scavenger hunt for paper eggs and Easter symbols. Mohr Library to Host Baby Farm Animals

Families are invited to stop by and say hello to some barnyard friends.

On Thursday, Feb. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m., children and families are invited to the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library (1 Memorial Ave., Johnston) to visit with some playful baby animals including some that kids may have never met before! Children will have the opportunity to pet and learn about an entire barnyard of babies including a diapered goat and a potbelly piglet. If that's not a cute enough incentive, the library will also be visited by several kittens, bunnies, chicks and ducklings during the event. After visiting with the animals, families can do several barnyard-themed craft projects together. No registration is required.

Mohr Library to Host Italy's 'La Befana'

The event is part of the library's "Passports on Friday" series.

  On Friday, Dec. 21 at 4:30 p.m., children and families are invited to the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library (1 Memorial Ave., Johnston) for a visit from La Befana, the face of Italy's Epiphany Eve holiday. In the Italian folklore, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of Jan. 5), similar to Sinterklaas or Santa Claus. Friday's event will feature a story, film and snacks, as well as a visit from La Befana herself! This is part of the library's series, “Passports on Friday” which is presented by Ms. Carlene and Ms. Michelle once a month through May. 'Kids Reading Across RI' Starts Tomorrow with Kick-Off at State House

The state Office of Library & Information Services hosts its third annual kick-off of the summer reading program tomorrow at the State House in Providence.

  Tomorrow afternoon at the State House, the Rhode Island Office of Library & Information Services is scheduled to host its 3rd Annual Kids Reading Across Rhode Island Kickoff Celebration, featuring Gail Carson Levine, author of Dave at Night. The event marks the official beginning of the summer reading season, and this year's celebration features shows by Carmela Cannata and Rose Adler's Performing Conures — more commonly known as parrots — and exhibitions by the RI Museum of Science and Art and woodworker John Magnan. EVENT OF THE DAY: Kids Book Club

The Readers Lair meets the first or second Thursday of ever month.

Kids in grades 2-5 can talk about books, play games, do crafts and have snacks at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., tonight at 6:30. The Reader's Lair meets the first or second Thursday of the month through May. Tonight's discussion centers around The World According to Humphry by Betty Birney. EVENT OF THE DAY: Spooky Art

Make Halloween globes at the library tonight.

Get into the spirit of Halloween at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., tonight at 6:30 p.m., and head home with a spooky decoration for the house. All are welcome to the library's art project tonight where you can make a Halloween globe filled with creepy crawlers and other ghastly goods. EVENT OF THE DAY: Book Club for Kids

The Mohr Library hosts the Reader's Lair Book Club beginning tonight at 6:30 for students in grades 2 through 5.

Book clubs aren't just for adults. Students in grades 2 though 5 are invited to join the Reader's Lair Book Club, which begins its metings tonight at 6:30 at Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave. The group will be meeting on the first or second Thursday of the month, October through May. The meetings will last for 50 minutes to an hour, and include book discussions, games, crafts and snacks.  The schedule and books for the first three months include:
