Johnston School Board to Award Gas Contract

  At a scheduled 5 pm meeting this afternoon, the Johnston School Committee is expected to award a contract for natural gas service to Direct Energy, a local subsidiary of Britain-based Centrica. The expected vote follows the installation of new gas-fired boilers and water heaters at Johnston High School last spring. Johnston Town Councilors provided $500,000 in town funds toward the replacement of the boilers, the first major update to the system since the high school opened in 1963, and local officials secured another $200,000 in grant money to cover the costs for the project. Filippi Challenges Polisena; 3 of 5 Council Seats to Be Contested

The two Johnston School Committee seats on the 2012 ballot will remain unchanged, after the filing deadline for candidates ended Wednesday.

  Incumbent Democrat Mayor Joseph Polisena is expected to face Republican challenger Peter Filippi III for the top municipal post in Johnston, and three town council seats are up for grabs in this year's elections. The Rhode Island Secretary of State's Candidates web page listed all of the Johnston candidates who filed their candidacy papers at Johnston Town Hall this week to qualify for the ballot. From here, each candidate must gather 50 signatures to officially secure their ballot spots. In Ward 1, where the council seat is currently held by Councilwoman Eileen Fuoco, the decision could be made at the September primary, if Democrats Edward Cardillo and Paul Crowell III complete the process to qualify. New HR Coordinator Named

The Johnston School Committee voted 5-0 to appoint Doreen Studley to the part-time position, which pays $45,000 plus benefits.

During a brief meeting on Tuesday night at Ferri Middle School, the Johnston School Committee approved the appointment of Doreen Studley to the part-time Human Resources Coordinator position that had been left unfilled since last November. According to Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo, Studley will be paid $45,000 per year plus benefits for the 30-hour-per-week job, which handles all of the school district's employment applications and ensures adherence to hiring standards. "She'll be in charge of hiring, monitoring benefits for people, and will be involved in grievances," DiLullo explained. Johnston Schools Draft Budget, Fiscal 2013

The Johnston School Committee is scheduled to hold a second budget workshop on its fiscal 2013 budget proposal on Tuesday night, Mar. 20, at 6 p.m.

Tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Ferri Middle School, the Johnston School Committee is scheduled to hold its second budget workshop on its proposed $49.52 million spending plan for fiscal 2013. The draft budget presented at the first budget workshop, held Mar. 15, is attached to this article. Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo conducted a line-by-line review of the budget last Thursday, and committee members decided to withhold any suggestions for cuts in the spending plan. According to the budget document released by the school administration, the fiscal 2013 proposal currently seeks an additional $585,000 from the town, and an increase of about $533,000 from the state. JHS Gets Champlin Grant Of $83,000

The school board also announced an effort to raise funds for a marker stone in memory of Liza Archilla, a local student who died on Nov. 10.

At its Dec. 6 meeting, the Johnston School Committee learned that the district is the recipient of an $83,000 grant from the Champlin Foundations. Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo told the board that high school science teacher Jennifer Sousa and district advisor Karen Lepore worked to secure the grant, which will help the department buy new science and technology equipment. According to the Champlin Foundations website, the Warwick-based nonprofit organization has donated more than $442 million to local agencies and schools since 1932. Filippelli Recognized As Teacher Of The Year

The Johnston School Committee honors the high school hockey team and gets a meal program deficit wiped out.

At its May 10 meeting, the Johnston School Committee recognized Lisa Filippelli, a Thornton Elementary School teacher, as Johnston teacher of the year. Filippelli was also a strong contender in the search for Rhode Island's teacher of the year. “Lisa did the town of Johnston proud, as she was a finalist in the Rhode Island Teacher of the Year search," said Supt. Preview Of May 10, 2011 School Board Meeting

The board is scheduled to recognize the J-NP championship hockey team.
