Viewfinder: JHS Baseball Re-Cap

We take a look back at the Panthers' 2011 title run.

They started in the (relative) cold of late March and finished in the heat of June — and with their 4-1 win over Prout on June 8, the Johnston High School varsity baseball team earned the title of state Division II champions. The accompanying gallery of photos and videos cover the 2011 season, from Opening Day to Championship Day. Right from the start, the Panthers looked strong — they won a close game to start the season against Woonsocket on April 6, then went on a streak of 10 victories before the Villa Novans stopped them exactly a month later with a 5-4 decision. Johnston also flat-out trounced a few of its divisional rivals — including a 14-2 victory at Ponaganset; a 16-4 win over Burrillville; a wild 20-10 contest at Mt. Hope in …

D-II Semis, Game 1: 'Novans Win, 8-6

Woonsocket and Johnston are scheduled to play game 2 on June 2.

Game 1 of the Division II varsity baseball semifinals came down to which team would land the final shot, and on June 1, it was the fourth-seeded Woonsocket Villa Novans who earned the win by a score of 8-6 over the Johnston High School Panthers at Pierce Field in East Providence. Top-ranked Johnston, playing against their toughest opponent from the regular season, scored first on a Greg Doutre RBI single that brought home junior Chris Pistacchio in the bottom of the first inning. The 'Novans struck back in the top half of the second, with Victor Hunt propelling an RBI double to right that scored Kory Lawrence. Panther starting pitcher, senior lefty Dylan Pingatore, tallied three strikeouts in the first two innings to keep the score 1-1. …

Panthers Continue Postseason Roll

Johnston snags a lead in the first inning and holds off the Juanita Sanchez Cavaliers for a second playoff victory.

The Johnston High School Panthers varsity baseball squad overcame an injury and withstood a seventh-inning rally to defeat the Juanita Sanchez Complex Cavaliers, 6-4, on May 26 at Johnston Memorial Park. Junior Gian Bianchi picked up the win for No. 1 JHS after leaving the game with a lower-leg contusion. “My mind right now is on Gian,” said DeMeo following the game. “I’m glad we won, but I think the celebration is down a little bit because we don’t know the status of [Bianchi].” The right-hander hobbled to the dugout late in the game and did not return for the Panthers. Johnston held on to win, however, and improved to 2-0 in the postseason. Ryan Geraghty led the Panthers to victory with two hits Thursday, including a first-inning home …

Panthers Overcome Early Mt. Hope Lead

The Johnston High School varsity baseball team kicked off the postseason with a come-from-behind win on May 25.

The Mt. Hope Huskies, the 16th seed in the D-II playoffs, grabbed an early 2-0 lead against No. 1 Johnston, but the Panthers rallied for a 5-2 win on May 25 at Johnston Memorial Park. Dylan Pingitore picked up the victory for the Panthers with a complete-game five-hitter, and Joe Simeone took the loss for Mt. Hope, after Johnston tagged the righty with one run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and another pair in the sixth. Simeone’s performance in the first, second and third innings gave the upset-minded Huskies an opportunity to establish an advantage Wednesday. “We played Mt. Hope before, but the gentleman who pitched today, he didn’t pitch against us the first time,” said Johnston head coach Stephen DeMeo. “He was very good. He …

Johnston Baseball Squad Clinches No. 1 Seed

The "visiting" Panthers defeat Burrillville in a game moved from soggy Eccleston Field in Harrisville to Johnston Memorial Park.

Senior first baseman Nick Loffredo delivered a one-out, RBI-single in the top of the eighth inning to propel Johnston High School past Burrillville, 4-2, May 22 at Johnston Memorial Park. With the victory, the first-place Panthers improve to 16-1 overall. “We’re where we want to be. We won our division outright. We’re the number one seed. You can’t get better than that,” said Johnston head coach Stephen DeMeo. With Sunday’s setback, the Broncos slip to 4-14 in league play, seventh in the eight-team sub-division. Senior Zach Smith took the loss for Burrillville, surrendering six hits and four runs in eight innings. The right-hander also allowed six walks, including three in the eighth inning. After Vincent O'Rourke hit a game-tying home run…
