The new facility is expected to open in late May or early June.
On the site of a late-night blaze that destroyed most of the building, the new Johnston Recreation Department office is nearing completion at Johnston Memorial Park. The Oct. 6, 2012 fire, apparently sparked by an electrical problem, left the original structure unusable. This week, staffers from the town and Clean Care of New England continued the work to finish the new facility, which is roughly twice the size of the original building. A new garage attached to the building is about three times the size of the original. Mayor Joseph Polisena estimated that the building should be reopened by the end of May or the beginning of June. Check out the accompanying video for before-and-after views of the Johnston Recreation Department office.

Beginning Oct. 11, the staff of the Johnston Recreation Department will be located at the Municipal Court, 1600 Atwood Ave.
An electrical fire that broke out early Saturday morning at the Johnston Recreation Department office led local officials to shut down the building — and to move the rec department's staffers to the Johnston Municipal Court. Mayor Joseph Polisena issued a statement on Tuesday morning, Oct. 9, saying the office "will be closed indefinitely" after Building Inspector Ben Nascenzi ordered it condemned and demolished. No injuries were reported following the fire. [See the accompanying video, running time 2:03, for scenes from inside the rec office and interviews with local officials.] The move of the recreation staff to the municipal court follows this spring's relocation of the courthouse staff to the recreation office at Memorial Park while…

Johnston Fire Chief Timothy McLaughlin said the early-morning fire caused "extensive" damage to the roof.
An early-morning blaze at Johnston Memorial Park left the recreation department's office with "extensive damage to the roof, and water and smoke [damage] throughout the building," according to Fire Chief Timothy McLaughlin, reached via text message this morning. McLaughlin also said that the fire was apparently caused by an electrical malfunction inside the building, which includes offices for the parks and recreation department and storage areas for equipment. No injuries were reported following the fire, McLaughlin added. Twitter user @CoreyWelch posted the following message with a photo at 2:20 am: Fire at Johnston Memorial Park rec building. The Johnston Recreation Department is seeking volunteer coaches for its soccer program, which starts Aug. 25.
It's one of the most popular sports programs in Johnston in the fall — youth soccer. Right now, though, there's a shortage of volunteers to help coach the 4- through 14-year-olds who participate in the Johnston Recreation Department league, Recreation Planner Vin Jackvony said during a recent interview. With a coaches meeting planned for this week, it's a great time to sign up and offer your help — and the best part is, the registration form is online. After completing the registration and getting a Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) check through the Rhode Island Attorney General's office — 150 South Main Street, Providence, RI. Phone: (401) 274-4400 — prospective coaches get training in CPR, First Aid, and AED (defibrillators) …
