A potentially historic blizzard is bearing down on Rhode Island.

No class in Johnston tomorrow. Johnston public schools are closed Friday due to the approaching blizzard, the school department announced Thursday afternoon. Snow is expected to begin Friday morning, intensifying throughout the day and reaching its height overnight Friday, into Saturday morning. At its peak, the storm is expected to dump as much as 3 inches an hour on Johnston, with some estimates putting the total snowfall over 2 feet. Strong winds are expected to accompany the storm, with gusts approaching 60 mph. Travel will be hazardous, and drivers are advised to stay off the roads Friday into Saturday. Schools Delayed 90 Minutes

Snow continues to fall around Johnston. Upwards of 5 inches are expected.

Johnston Public Schools have been delayed 90 minutes Tuesday morning and morning kindergarten has been canceled thanks to heavy snow that continues to fall around Johnston. Johnston schools announced the delay Monday evening just after 8, as snow fell steadily throughout the town. The National Weather Service is calling for as much as 5 inches to fall in Johnston. The storm began late Monday afternoon and is expecting to continue dumping the white stuff over much of Rhode island through 4 a.m. Tuesday. Johnston Schools Earn High Marks on State's 'Report Card'

All of the town's schools achieved "Typical" or "Leading" honors, two of the top three school classifications on the recent tests.

  The Rhode Island Department of Education gave all Johnston schools grades of "Typical" or "Leading," two of the top three classifications in its 2012 School Report Card. In contrast to other districts, where 16 schools are on the Education Department's intervention list, as reported last week by the Providence Journal, Johnston's schools were noted for scoring near the state average in math and reading, and in some cases surpassing the Rhode Island statistics. With schools ranked on a 100-point, six-category system, Brown Avenue School led elementary schools with a 71 overall score and earned the "Leading" classification.
