Cicilline, Langevin, Whitehouse win Re-Election

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.

It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

Abel Collins Kicks Off Run Against Langevin

The Independent candidate from Matunuck recently announced his candidacy for the U.S. House seat currently held by six-term Rep. James Langevin.

  Pledging to bring government back to the people, Abel Collins, a 33-year-old child of Matunuck, environmental activist, poet and political newcomer announced he is challenging Congressman James Langevin for Rhode Island’s second congressional district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district covers most of western Rhode Island, including Johnston. “This campaign is going to be about more than just making a point,” Collins said last week from the podium of the State House’s state room at a press conference where he announced his candidacy. “I am in this race to win.” Collins is a graduate of Brown University and a program director for the Sierra Club. Junior LL Squad Earns Plaudits

Johnston's Junior Little League team won some notable praise after winning the Eastern Regional tournament in Freehold Township, NJ, on August 11 — Mayor Joseph Polisena and two members of the Rhode Island Congressional delegation contacted JohnstonPatch with words of encouragement for the team. During a phone interview on August 12, Mayor Joseph Polisena praised the team for their performance. "I'm proud of them and the whole town is proud of them," Polisena said.
