Chase Suspect Nearly Hits Pedestrian, Tries to 'Fake Out' Officer

A Johnston man faces charges of eluding an officer and resisting arrest following an Oct. 20 high-speed chase.

  Johnston Police arrested a local man for resisiting arrest and leading an officer on a high-speed chase on Oct. 20, during which he nearly struck a pedestrian on Simmonsville Avenue. Ptlm. Mark Bairos reported that he saw the car driven by Lorenzo DiBiaso, 49, of 9 Enfield St., go past him "at an estimated speed of over 50 mph" in the 30-mph zone of Simmonsville Avenue just before noon on Oct. 20. Bairos wrote that DiBiasio "turned his head and looked directly at me" as he sped past. As he pursued DiBiasio on Simmonsville toward Plainfield Pike, Bairos reported that DiBiasio "increased his speed and went left of the double center lines" to pass another car. Man Arrested Following Series Of High-Speed Chases

Johnston Police charged a Providence man after he reportedly fled from three separate officers.

Johnston Police charged Paul Bulgin, 26, of 30 Gelser St., Providence, with one count driving with a suspended license, one count of reckless driving, and three counts of eluding police, all felonies, on Feb. 4. Ptlm. Jared DeAngelis wrote in his report that on Feb. 3, he spotted a black 4-door Acura with an expired registration sticker stopped at the traffic light of Route 6 and Atwood Avenue. After checking the registration, DeAngelis learned the plates were last registered to a different car. The car continued south in the northbound lane of Atwood Avenue and went through the red light, DeAngelis reported. DeAngelis reported that he pursued the vehicle with his lights and sirens on at a speed of 50 mph in a 25-mph zone, but lost sight …

Larceny at AT&T store: Johnston Police made separate arrests of James P. Fleet and Steven M. Fleet on charges of larceny over $500 and conspiracy. On Oct. 22 Ptlmn. Adam Parkinson and Mark A. Viera, and Det. Christopher DeCesare responded to a call of a shoplifting at the AT&T store at 1473 Atwood Ave. around 2:50 p.m. The sales consultant told Viera two males entered the store and went to opposite sides of the store. The first suspect allegedly activated the alarm on the display cell phone when he attempted to remove the phone. The consultant used his alarm key to deactivate the alarm. At that time the second suspect allegedly dislodged a phone from the other end of the store and as the consultant approached him the suspect pocketed the …

Domestic assault with knife: Johnston Police arrested Arthur A. Grundy, 32, of 861 Plainfield St., Providence, on a charge of domestic simple assault/battery, third offense, and domestic disorderly conduct. On Oct. 29 around 8 a.m., Grundy allegedly attacked his wife after she received a phone call from her ex-husband. According to police, Grundy allegedly kicked her off the bed causing her to fall on the floor landing on her hip and stomach. He then allegedly dragged her across the floor into the kitchen area where he used a knife to threaten her. Grundy’s wife called the police later that night to report the incident after she and Grundy began to argue again. She told him she was going to call the police and Grundy fled from the …

High-speed chase suspect arrested: Johnston Police arrested Michael H. Evans, 43, of 250 Old Baptist Road, North Kingstown, at his home on Sept. 21, after he reportedly admitted to being the driver involved in a high-speed chase in Johnston on Sept. 4. After Dets. Christopher DeCesare and James Brady arrived at Evans's home, they read Evans his rights and asked him if he was driving on Hartford Avenue on Sept. 4. Evans allegedly told the detectives he was fighting with his girlfriend the night before, and that the incident was on his mind as he drove on Hartford Avenue, according to the police report. According to the police report filed after his arrest, Evans said he was unaware of how fast he was driving, but added he knew the officers …

High Speed Pursuit: Johnston Police suspect Michael H. Evans, 43, of 250 Old Baptist Road, North Kingstown, of reckless driving, eluding an officer with a motor vehicle, speeding, and use of breakdown lane for travel. Johnston Police Patrolman Matthew Winsor’s dashboard radar read 74 miles per hour as the driver of a tan Mercedes sped down Hartford Avenue on Sept. 4 around 10 a.m. Winsor activated his lights and siren and pursued the driver. The driver continued to speed in the 35-mph zone with Winsor following at 85 miles per hour east on Hartford Avenue. Winsor continued to follow the Mercedes onto Route 295 South to Route 6 East. Disorderly conduct arrest Johnston Police Capt. Robert Menard and Patrolman Luca Lancellotti Jr. responded to the Hess Gas Station on Plainfield Street Tuesday, Feb. 15 around 6:45 p.m. for a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance. When the officers arrived, witnesses told them that a man was asking people for money and cigarettes. The man allegedly caused a scene by screaming and yelling at someone who said they didn’t have any cigarettes. The man then left the area walking west on Plainfield Street. Menard and Lancellotti caught up with the man, later identified as Gerald Bergevine. Lancellotti stated in his report that he could “detect a strong scent of an alcoholic beverage emanating from (Bergevine’s) breath.” When the …
