ACLU: 'Not Every Girl Wants to Be Cinderella'

Steve Brown of the ACLU said the father-daughter dance issue is old news in Cranston — Johnston has been hosting family dances for years.

  Steven Brown, director of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said Cranston's father-daughter dance ban isn't about state law versus federal law regarding gender discrimination in schools. "The school district was fostering blatant stereotypes that are not allowable in this day in age," Brown said in a telephone interview with CranstonPatch. "Arranging for a dance for girls to go to and a ballgame for boys to go is a tradition that may have worked in the 1950s, but it doesn't necessarily play out the same in 2012." Father-Daughter Dance Ban — Right Step, or Bad Move?

Nearby Cranston recently banned father-daughter and mother-son activities — what do you think Johnston should do?

  If you're a dad, it's probably among the few times you get in a suit and tie, outside of weddings — the annual father-daughter dance. Recently, the Cranston School Committee decided to stop the practice over concerns voiced by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a single mom whose daughter could not attend a recent event. District lawyers advised the school board to end the activities because state law is more restrictive than federal Title IX. Johnston School Committee Member Robert LaFazia (Dist. 1) explained during a phone interview this morning that about 12 years ago, he and other parents at Thornton Elementary School started holding dances for families, rather than specifying father-daughter or mother-son.
