The company funded $3 million in improvements to Atwood Avenue, from the entrance of Stone Hill Marketplace to Central Avenue.
FM Global of Johnston recently announced the completion of a $3-million project to widen Atwood Avenue and install sidewalks and other pedestrian-friendly features. According to a statement released by the company, the project began in August, 2010, and included movement of several utility poles to accomodate the new travel lane on the northbound side of Atwood Avenue in front of the former Allendale Insurance campus. The company reported that minor traffic signal and landscaping work are scheduled for later this month. The town councilor recently spoke about a letter he read at the July 18 council meeting.
During the July 18 town council meeting, Councilman Ernest Pitochelli (I-Dist. 2) read from a letter he had written to the ownership of FM Global telling the company not to fall prey to what he called "extortion" by residents. Pitochelli explained in the letter that he has heard from neighbors who want trees planted on their property at FM Global's expense. "Please don't (pay for the trees), because if you do for one, who knows how many more may seek the same so-called privacy?" Pitochelli wrote. In a follow-up interview, Pitochelli said he thinks it's wrong that residents are trying to get money out the company, which "has been very cooperative with the town of Johnston," he explained.
