The three-week investigation began in Warwick after the Valero on Post Road was robbed and ended on Tuesday in Johnston.
It took three weeks of connecting dots and collecting evidence, but Cranston Det. Paula Duffy kept plugging away at the case of a serial robber who had held up four Cranston businesses in less than a month, brandishing a handgun every time. Now, a former employee of the Johnston Highway Department — 48-year-old Kenneth Hassell, of 60 Highland Ave., Johnston — is behind bars at the Adult Correctional Institutions and could be spending the next few years in prison, if convicted. It all began when Hassell walked into the Valero Gas Sation on Post Road in Warwick on April 16. It was 2:30 p.m. and he demanded money, flashing his handgun. Witnesses at the scene were able to get a license plate number. That plate number eventually led police to…

The older white moustached man, who stands between six-feet, two inches and six-feet, four inches tall, was wearing a green knit hat, glasses, blue jeans and a grey sweatshirt. After loading the cash into an attache case he brought with him, the suspect fled on foot towards Miller's Crossing. It is unclear if he got into a car after running away. Two men, arrested near the Johnston line, are facing drug charges after they were caught with nearly two pounds of heroin. It all started with a routine traffic stop.
Cranston Police arrested two men and seized nearly two pounds of heroin after a routine traffic stop off Farmington Avenue last week. The street value of the heroin was about $110,000. According to police, Luis Marte, 34, of 151 Farmington Ave.; and Luis Fernandez, 26, of 70 Perkins Ave., were pulled over after police saw them driving a 2006 black BMW on Princess Avenue "committing traffic violations while displaying a suspended license." The officers on patrol were Daniel Dempsey and Austin Smith. Smith, a rookie just three weeks out of the academy, was being shown the ropes by Dempsey when they saw the BMW. The suspects reportedly tried to flee police when Dempsy tried to stop them and they followed the BMW into the parking lot of …
