Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning

Most Rhode Island communities, including Johnston, are under a critical fire weather advisory today beginning at noon.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning beginning at noon today for most of Rhode Island, including Johnston, and parts of Massachusetts. [To report a fire, dial 9-1-1, or call the Johnston Fire Department at (401) 351-1600.] According to the NWS warning, wind speeds are expected to gust to 30 mph with humidity levels near 15 percent and high temperatures in the low 80s. That combination of factors — along with the winter's low amount of snowfall — increases the chance to fires to occur and spread quickly. Today's warning is effective through 8 pm.
