Bites Nearby: Little Rhody

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.

The Little Rhody Breakfast and Lunch Café is more than just a local wiener joint. It also serves up the finest Monte Cristo sandwich this reviewer has eaten. Nestled in behind the Little Rhody distribution center at 5 Day Street, off of Killingly Street, this eatery has your common breakfast fare and lunch favorites. This morning, I was going for low-cal, so I naturally opted for the Monte Cristo. Between two golden-fried, egg-battered pieces of French toast were ham steak, sausage and finely melted Swiss cheese. Served with homefries and an eye-opening cup of coffee, this option targeted my usual two key areas – hunger and decaffeination — and at $7.99, you just cannot go wrong. Space is limited inside the restaurant, but I did not …

Bites Nearby: English Muffin

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.

I have a huge appetite first thing in the morning, so breakfast is always on my mind when I wake up. I have met my match, something I cannot eat by myself – and that’s the breakfast at English Muffin. My guest and I decided to split an omlette, with an additional order of toast and split an order of stuffed French toast. Sampling from the menu: Restaurant was surprisingly quiet when we arrived around 9:30 a.m., but began to fill in. Waitstaff are attentive and persistently pleasant, which helped ease my stomach’s growl due to the delay in the kitchen. Other things to note: …

Bites Nearby: Cookie Lady & Co.

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally owned eatery.

Breakfast is exciting, especially when a place gets it right. Cookie Lady & Co. definitely gets it right. The prices are almost laughably low — Eggs Benedict, which was my meal of choice, is at least $1.75 less expensive than anywhere else I have ever ordered it. The wallet-friendly prices did not affect the size of the serving. I dined alone and I was hungry, so I ordered pancakes as well. From the menu, for one: *I ordered one pancake, but, Ben -- the cook, does not like making one pancake. He said it “looks boring,” so he made me a descending-in-size stack of three cakes. No extra charge for stylistic flourishes. Other things to note:  Total bill for one – eggs benedict, pancakes and coffee: $10.53 + 20-percent tip = $12.64
