5 Things To Know Today: March 28

One of last days for programs at the "old" Mohr; three area blood drives; Little League tryouts; public hockey in Smithfield, and today in history: hurl that rock.

3 Days And Counting: Today is the first of the three final days that the "old" Marian J. Mohr Library will be open; after March 31, the current facility will close until the new library opens on April 9. Students in grades 6 to 12 can Enjoy Spring and celebrate with old-fashioned games like Kick the Can, and indulge in old-fashioned lemonade, starting at 3 p.m. outside. Latest School Budget: At 10 a.m. today, we'll be uploading the latest school budget proposal to "Your Government Handbook." For some context to the document, you can read about the school committee's March 16 workshop and watch a video from the meeting, all without leaving the cozy confines of JohnstonPatch. The school board is scheduled to meet March 22 for a third workshop at 6 p.m., with a vote set for 7 p.m. Like A Plastic Cup... No Glass: 5 Patch points to anyone who gets that reference. What I meant to say was: "No class," but not that way. St. Rocco School won't be in session today because of a professional day for Catholic school teachers. Participants can choose plants to place outside to attract the pretty winged critters, and make their own butterflies using provided materials. Johnston Recreation Spring Sports: Track & Field Club and T-Ball & Fitness programs run by the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department begin their registrations today. Kindergarten Registration: Johnston Public Schools opens registration for kidergarten classes today from 8 to 11 a.m. and 12 to 2:30 p.m. Children must be 5 years of age by Sept. 1, 2011, to be eligible. Call 401-233-0081 to schedule your appointment. Women's History Month: Marian J. Mohr Library hosts a celebration of Women's History Month this afternoon at 3 p.m. for students in grades 6 to 12. It's Women's History Month; here are five interesting facts about how it came to be.

What Is It? Women's History Month is a designation given to the month of March every year to honor the contributions made by women in America and around the world. Find out lots more at the National Women's History Project website, and read on... Why March? The U.S. Census Bureau notes March 8, 1857 as the key date in the movement to establish Women's History Month. On that date, women factory workers in New York City protested over working conditions. There were other notable achievements for women after that — you'll find a few of them in "Key Dates In Women's History" below. How Did It Become A Whole Month?
