As of 10 pm last night, the Rhode Island Secretary of State website reported that incumbent Eileen Fuoco had won the three-candidate Democratic primary for Johnston Town Council Ward 1, and incumbent Sen. Campaigns Make Final GOTV Push

Volunteers — and candidates — were at Johnston Democratic Headquarters trying to garner more votes in the last few hours of today's primary.

The number of voters casting ballots in today's primary in Johnnston crept above 2,000 just before 6 pm today, with volunteers working the phone banks at Democratic Headquarters to get more people out to the polls. "If [people] haven't voted, the phone banks are occupied here with volunteers making phone calls to those identified voters that we know are supporters of the endorsed candidates, and we'll get them out," explained Democratic Chairman Richard DelFino. "Games are won in the fourth quarter, and this is where we think the organization is going to make a difference." As expected in Ward 1, where incumbent Councilwoman Eileen Fuoco is in her second consecutive three-way Democratic primary, the two polling places there reported the …

The Great Debate

Do Union Endorsements Still Matter?

It's an election year tradition — but does a union's endorsement determine who you support?

Every election year, amid the charges and counter-charges by candidates, voters also receive a veritable onslaught of mailers and commercials about union support for particular hopefuls. In Johnston, RI Council Local 94 has endorsed incumbent Town Councilwoman Eileen Fuoco (D) in today's primary against two opponents, as well as 19-year-old candidate Nicole Acciardo in the Democratic primary race against Sen. Frank Lombardo III for the District 25 seat. The AFSCME/AFL-CIO organization also supported the three incumbent members of the Rhode Island Congressional delegation who are up for reelection: Reps. David Cicilline and James Langevin, and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse. When they get endorsements, candidates benefit from union volunteers …

It’s a crying shame that many Rhode Islanders haven’t seen the light yet regarding government labor unions and the realization that whom ever they support should be a red flag to oppose them. It can be very disheartening indeed. What unions do in the private sector is of less concern but they do not belong in government…   more ›

Snap Poll: Republican, Democratic Political Influencers React to Romney VP Choice

Over the weekend, Patch polled several prominent local Republicans and Democrats in a Patch survey about their thoughts on Gov. Mitt Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as a vice president selection.

Rhode Island Republican political influencers strongly agree that Gov. Mitt Romney's choice of Rep. Paul Ryan as his choice for vice president will help galvanize the state's Republicans. However, state Republicans are split on whether his choice will help win over undecided voters, according to a Patch snap poll conducted over the weekend. Meanwhile, a majority of Democrats surveyed on the same topic over the weekend feel Romney's choice of the Wisconsin congressman for vice president will help galvanize the Democratic party in the state and help win the votes of senior citizens. Patch sent survey questions to 52 Republicans and 52 Democratic party activists and elected officials within 48 hours of Romney's announcement. Twelve …

There are many factors that need to be considered regarding this survey. First, we need to know the interests of the people involved. There are approximately 29 million civil servants; I believe that also includes retirees, and when you include voters in the same households it equates to approximately 31% of the electorate. Next there is a total of 100 million Americans collecting some form of …   more ›
