Originally built in 1934, Brown Avenue School was replaced with a two-room schoolhouse in 1942 and expanded with another four rooms in 1961. It is the only public school serving children in the western section of Johnston. The Rhode Island Department of Education reported that Brown Avenue third, fourth and fifth graders surpassed the state average in NECAP testing in six of seven categories in the 2009 - 2010 school year.
