Monday Essentials: A Glance at the Week Ahead in Johnston

Five
A long time ago, we used to post a "Five Things you Need to Know Today" every day that lists five topics that matter to Cranston residents. After many months posting this every day, we stopped. Well, it's back. On Monday, we're calling it "Monday Essentials" and will try to give you an idea of what's happening this week and what you need to know. The rest of the week, we'll try to give a snapshot of the upcoming day. If you have something that would be a good addition to a daily "five things" post, email me: mark.schieldrop@patch.com.

Landfill
The past two weeks have been heavy on the Central Landfill news. First, the mayor held a press conference to announce that gas collector Broadrock Renewables was releasing untreated gas into the air (the company denies it) and the plant was being shut down by the town because of that and other safety concerns. Then last week, an explosion at a pipe collecting raw gas caused a fire, infuriating local officials. And then the Conservation Law Foundation announced it will sue both Broadrock and Rhode Island Resource Recovery for a variety of alleged violations including the assertion by CLF that the landfill has been operating without a permit for 16 years. We'll follow this story this week and find new angles.

Mohr
Grace J. Moorehead at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library contacted us a while back to let us know that one of the adult programs there has been cancelled. If you're planning to participate in "Groundbreaking Reads," you'll have to find another program. It's unfortunate, she said, but necessary. There are plenty of other great things going on there, though, so if you haven't been to the library in a while, now is the time. Keep checking our events section for the latest happenings at the library.

Meetings:
A few meetings this week in Johnston. The Retirement Board meets July 25 at 6:30 p.m. The Zoning Board meets on the same night at 7 p.m.

Society
The Johnston Historical Society elected new officers at its recent meeting — and there were no major surprises. The nine-member board was reelected. The biggest thing the group has coming up is the groundbreaking on an expansion at the Museum Barn next to the Elijah Angell House on Putnam Pike. The Johnston Sun Rise has a good story.
