Photos: Campfires for Cancer 2012

The 4th Annual Campfires for Cancer event was held June 23 at Johnston Memorial Park.

 

On June 23, the Johnston Memorial Cancer Events group held their fourth annual Campfires for Cancer and cookout at to benefit the Hasbro Children's hospital hematology/oncology department.

This year, there was a new addition to the event — the Co-Ed Stilettos/Boots Fun Run.

Melissa LaFazia, daughter of JMCE members Vin and Linda LaFazia, came up with the idea of the 1/4-mile Fun Run, which was sponsored by Chill's Bar & Grill, Alex & Ani Jewelry, Next Level Fitness, the and the Johnston Firefighters.

Taking top honors in the stiletto race were Johnston Fire Department Pvt. Dominic aRusso in the Boots division, Michael Theroux of Chili's in the men's high heels competition, andMary Pacheco also in the ladies' high heels group.

The Hitman Group, led by Johnston resident Mark Markrush, and Tom Beaudreau's Ordinary Heart Band entertained the crowd from the park's bandstand.

In a change from last year, JMCE members lit campfires on the island at Pocassett Pond, instead of the previous locations along the walkng path.

JMCE member Judi Graham said a bocce tournament to benefit Hasbro Children's Hospital will be held in the fall.
