Sports Brief: Panthers Defeat Burrillville, 16-4

The Johnston High School baseball team finishes vacation week with a 3-0 record, outscoring opponents 34-7.

The varsity baseball team completed vacation week with a 3-0 record, extending its overall season record to 7-0, with a 16-4 win over Burrillville High School on April 22.

Over three games, the Panthers outscored their opponents 34-7, securing two wins after the games were called under the Rhode Island Interscholatic League's mercy rule.

During the April 22 contest at , Burrillville junior Kevin Deschamps hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but the Panthers responded with a 8-run rally in the home half of the stanza. Senior Captain Grag Doutre brought in two with a single, and senior Steve Almagno tallied two hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base, all in the bottom of the first inning.

Freshman Joe Bongiovanni took the hill for the Panthers during Friday's match-up, racking up 3 strikeouts and giving up 2 hits and 2 walks in the first two innings of work.

Johnston walked home a number of scores, including two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Burrillville batted in the top of the fifth, officials called the game over.
