Former Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Dennis Ray "Oil Can" Boyd visited the on Aug. 17 to have lunch with the residents, sign autographs and to take a lot of pictures.
Sales Director Julie Fox said she called the Boston Red Sox director of alumni and told him they were having a Red Sox theme day and asked if he could help find a local player to celebrate the day at the Bridge.
"Oil Can" Boyd now lives in East Providence with his wife and two children. At the Bridge, Mayor Joseph Polisena proclaimed Aug. 17 Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd Day in Johnston and gave him the key to the town.

Boyd played for the Red Sox from 1982 to 1989, then played for the Montreal Expos from 1990 to 1991 and the Texas Rangers in 1991. A blood clot in his right arm ended his 10 years playing Major League Baseball.
