Junior LL Regionals: One Win, One Loss for Johnston Squad

After a 16-7 drubbing of host team Freehold, NJ, Johnston's Junior Little League team fell, 9-4, to Oxford, MA, on Sunday.

 

Johnston's Junior Little League All-Star team will look to stave off elimination from the East Regional Tournament against Bangor, ME, in a scheduled 3 pm contest this afternoon in Freehold, NJ.

In their first contest on Saturday afternoon, the three-time state champion squad pummeled host team Freehold, NJ, 16-7, according to the Junior Little League website.

On Sunday, Johnston tallied two runs early and two in the seventh inning on the way to a 9-4 loss to Oxford, MA.

Michael Caparco notched the first score for Johnston on a single by Armani Henderson in the first inning, and Matt Kennedey extended the lead to 2-0 on Nick Raoposo's sacrifice fly in the second.

Oxford's Zachary Renihan gave his team the lead with a three-run homer off starter Korey Fijal (3.1 IP, 3 runs, 2 hits, 6 strikeouts) in the bottom of the second.

The Massachusetts team knocked reliever John Willette for six more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and Johnston showed signs of a comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs before Henderson hit a pop-out to end the contest.

With the loss, Johnston must win its way out of the consolation bracket.
