Great Escape: Can 'Footloose' Be A Hit The Second Time?

There's a lot of variety in our list of things to do this weekend, from comedy — including some local talent and a Pulitzer Prize winner — to a big movie release, seafood festival, sports and more.

Music at local venues:

  • Ball’s Sports Bar and Grille in Johnston has live music scheduled this weekend with Identity Crisis set to take the stage on Oct. 14 followed by VENTT on Oct. 15.  Both shows begin at 9:30 p.m.
  • Bar 101 on Atwood Avenue will feature music from the band Flashback on Oct. 15. This show is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Comedy:

  • Local comedian and Providence resident PJ Thibodeau has three shows scheduled at the Comedy Connection RI in East Providence this weekend, one at 8 p.m. on Oct. 14 and two on Oct. 15 at 8 and 10:15 p.m.  For more about PJ Thibodeau and his comedy visit the Comedy Connection RI Calendar.
  • Trinity Repertory Company debuts Clybourne Park on Oct. 14, a two-act play by Bruce Norris and directed by Brian Mertes. This “buzz-saw sharp new comedy," as it’s been called by The Washington Post, and 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner will run through Nov. 20.  Tickets are available now. Visit Trinity for more information.

 Seafood:

  • India Point in Providence will host the First Annual Rhode Island Seafood Festival on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be plenty of the area’s best seafood to enjoy, along with a variety of beer and wine from local distributors and live music on the pier stage. Admission is free. A percentage of the proceeds from vendors will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Irene Relief Fund and the Rhode Island Chapter of Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting oceans, waves, and beaches.  Check out www.riseafoodfest.com for more about this event.

Sports:

  • The Providence Bruins take the ice at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center this weekend with games scheduled for Oct. 14 at 7:05 p.m. against the Manchester Monarchs and Oct.16 at 4:05 p.m. against the Portland Pirates. Tickets information can be found at Providence Bruins.

  • Footloose, starring Kenny Wormald, a seasoned dancer originally from Stoughton, MA, who has performed with some big names like Madonna and Mariah Carey, and Julianne Hough of Dancing with the Stars fame, opens, Oct. 14 in wide release.  A remake of the original 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose follows Ren MacCormack as he moves from Boston to a small southern town where loud music and dancing have been prohibited.

Check it out and see how it compares to the first one — if you are old enough to remember the first one, that is. The film is rated PG-13. For information on movie times and tickets, visit Moviefone.com .
