EVENT OF THE DAY: Mayor's Cup Soccer

The second annual match between Mayor Joseph Polisena's hand-picked squad and a team of local youth soccer coaches is set for 7 p.m. at the Soccer Complex.

Mayor Joseph Polisena's select crew of players will be looking for some payback tonight, as they face a squad of youth soccer coaches in the second annual Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament.

The game is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Soccer Complex behind Johnston High School.

During an interview at Town Hall this week, Polisena spoke about the idea behind the tournament.

"We wanted to show to the kids, and their parents and the coaches, that this administration and the people who work for us are commited to the sports programs in the town," Polisena explained. "Sports are an integral part of the learning process here."

Among the expected players on the mayor's team are North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi, Cumberland Mayor Daniel McKee, the town's General Assembly delegation, local school committee members, and town councilors — including Council Vice President Stephanie Manzi, who "is one of the youth coaches, but I commandeered her," Polisena said.

The mayor also admitted to recruiting "a couple of ringers" from the Johnston High School girls' varsity team.

"We play everybody," Polisena noted. "We make sure everyone gets a chance to play."

Admission to the game is free; a concession stand will be open during the event.
