'Beauty, Brains, And Basketball'

The St. Rocco Lady Raptors, made up of seventh- and eighth-graders from the local Catholic school, recently took first place in the girls Grammar Division I and won the Rhode Island Catholic Athletic League championship.

Rhonda Sasa sent us the attached photos of the Lady Raptors grade 7 & 8 girls' basketball team, who recently took first place in the girls' Grammar I Division and won the Catholic Athletic League championship.

"They're awesome, and I'm so proud of them — they worked hard," Sasa told us, adding the teams' championship tee-shirts will sport a motto she designed: "Beauty, Brains, and Basketball."

St. Rocco finished the 2011-12 season with a 10-1 record, good for the top spot overall in their division.

The Lady Raptors then proceeded to defeat Fr. John V. Doyle School of Coventry, 29-22, at the state CAL Championship on Mar. 11 at St. Mary Academy — Bay View in East Providence.

On the weekend of Mar. 30 through Apr. 1, the Lady Raptors are scheduled to travel to Burlington, VT, for the Regional tournament.

The local school's basketball squads have been sharing in the accomplishments — earlier in the month, St. Rocco's girls Midget team defeated St. Peter's of Warwick to take first place in their division.
