Photo Gallery: Hershey Track & Field Meet At Rhode Island College

Johnston Recreation hosted the statewide track & field competition at Rhode Island College on July 13.

The Rhode Island Hershey Track & Field Meet, originally scheduled for July 8, was postponed to July 13 because of rain — and when it was finally held at Rhode Island College, competitors had to endure a 20-minute rain delay.

The has been hosting the competition for the past six years, and has been active in the meet for more than 20 years, explained Director Dan Mazzulla, who has served as chairman of the event for more than 12 years.

Mazzulla said 12 communities in Rhode Island participated this year, with more than 250 children between the ages of 8  and 14 competing. Johnston had 22 representatives at the state meet.

Children could compete in more than one event such as the 50-meter dash; 100-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1600-meter races; the standing long jump; and the softball throw.

Johnston Recreation staff and volunteers from all around the state recorded times and measurements for each competition, and the top three finishers in each event earned awards for their achievements.
