Photo Gallery: Healthy Kids Day At Brown Avenue School

Johnston firefighters gave a presentation on using the Jaws of Life.

The hot and hazy weather on June 8 did not stop Brown Avenue Elementary School's12th Annual "Healthy Kids Day."

Physical education and health teacher Scott Leonard and school nurse Diana Rossi coordinated the event, which consisted of the students being educated on health related exercises in a fun manner.

Johnston Sen. Frank Lombardo secured a $2,000 grant to make the Healthy Kids Day possible. The students also had a nutritious lunch provided by the grant and received a Healthy Kids Day t-shirt by the PTO of Brown Avenue school.

Johnson & Wales University director of food and safety Susan Wallace and chef Matthew Jaffey performed a demonstration on food and safety tips and the importance of always washing your hands. The students also received J & W kid-friendly cookbooks — featuring Brown Avenue fifth-grader Gabriella Scarcella and J & W chef Michael Makuch.

The Johnston Recreation Department, Next Level Fitness and Christina Rondeau Kickboxing provided interactive exercise stations for the students.

A 'Jaws of Life' demonstration was performed by the Johnston Firefighters Department and led by Johnston firefighter David Iannuccilli and Richard Boehm. Brown Avenue principal Helina Dlugon was the "victim" in the 1997 Oldsmobile which was donated by Metals Recycling Schnitzer Northeast in Johnston.
