Panthers, Landfill, Dems, Budget, Summer, and Shutdown Made News

Here's our weekly look back at the news that made headlines in Johnston for the week ending June 22, 2012.

 

Panthers: Okay, so technically, the Johnston High School varsity baseball team's happened on June 14, but the Air Show was last weekend. Plus, we couldn't help celebrating the victory on Monday with an encore posting of the video from Game 2 of the state finals against Prout, where the Panthers wrapped up the championship.

Landfill: Unpleasant odors led to unpleasant memories of last summer for folks living in towns near the Central Landfill. On a positive note, though, — and sponsored by Johnston Rep. Stephen Ucci — passed the General Assembly.

Dems: In advance of this fall's election, the Johnston Democratic Town Committee this week to speak at their endorsement meeting, scheduled for Wednesday night.

Budget: Under the fiscal 2013 spending plan approved by the Johnston Town Council on Monday night, the overall budget will be more than $90 million, but .

Summer: June 20 was the — and, fittingly, that day also saw hot and humid weather move into the area. As of Friday afternoon, it was still warm and humid with temps hovering around 90.

Shutdown: Also this week, the town council for violating a previous court order that prohibited the landscaper from using residential land for business purposes.
