Panthers Await Next Rival in D-II Playoffs

The Johnston High School varsity baseball squad is scheduled to return to the field tomorrow at 4 pm at Memorial Park.

Following their 10-1 defeat of Central High School on Friday afternoon, the varsity baseball Panthers await the winner of this afternoon's Mt. Pleasant-Central matchup in the consolation bracket.

Sophomore James Picchi went the distance against the Knights on Friday, racking up five strikeouts against five hits and providing a two-run single at the plate to help the Panthers advance in the Division II playoffs, the Providence Journal reported.

Entering the playoffs with the top seed in the division on the strength of a 18-1 regular season record, to begin its postseason defense of its 2011 state championship.

In Region 2, Woonsocket advanced past Narragansett, dropping the Mariners to the consolation bracket to play the winner of this afternoon's Juanita Sanchez-North Smithfield contest.

Westerly and Tolman are also scheduled to play this afternoon in the third round of the Region 3 playoffs.

The Prout School, , hosts either Exeter-West Greenwich or West Warwick in the Region 4 bracket, depending on the outcome of this afternoon's game at E-WG.

Following a 6-2 defeat of Burrillville, the Crusaders knocked E-WG out of the winners bracket with a 14-2 win on May 31.
