Panthers Advance To D-III Semifinals

The Johnston High School boys' basketball team opened up a second-half lead that the Exeter-West Greenwich team couldn't overcome.

The boys' basketball squad advanced to the Division III semifinals with a win over the Exeter-West Greenwich Scarlet Knights on Feb. 21, 67-57.

E-WG (9-9 in D-III South, 11-10 overall) won its Sunday match-up against Middletown, 68-48, for the right to face the Panthers at Johnston High School on Monday night, and the Knights did their best to hold the contest close for the first half.

At the break on Monday, Johnston (17-1 in D-III North, 20-3 overall) held a 30-25 advantage, with senior captain Isaac Medeiros chipping in 14 for the Panthers and Ryan Anderson adding 14 of his own. Exeter-West Greenwich's Ben Andrews accrued 16 in the first half, but also found himself with two fouls.

Johnston, which earned a first-round bye in the playoffs, opened up the lead in the second half and led 61-39 with 4:36 to play and cruised to the 67-57 victory.

The Panthers advance to the semifinal game Friday night at Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick to face the winner of the Feb. 22 showdown between The Prout School and Warwick Veterans' Memorial High School in Wakefield.
